Personally, I would take a few pictures of the paintwork damage before it goes into their workshop - at least you will have some evidence if they do decide 'bodge' it....

   £60/hour? Feck! That's outrageous! How can they charge that? Definetly take it to a specialist next time, Fiat mechanics are reknowned for being Chimps at the best of time. Shocking.
Even if you have to travel a little, and take time off work, it's worth it. How much do you love the coop :D
Hope everyone's having a merry little xmas by the way (apart from this) (y)

So you reckon ALL FIAT mechanics are chimps do ya ?

Being a FIAT technician through and through from my apprenticeship, i find that a F##king insult.

HOW F##KING DARE YOU... tar all FIAT mechanics/technicians with the same brush just because you've had bad experiences with some dealers.
I happen to be very proud of the fact that every job i do gets 100% effort, 100% of the time, and to hear you come out with things like that just F##ks me off big time considering I'm working for £9.00 of that £60.00.

My two penn'orth:

The times I have had to go to a Fiat dealer, in one the parts dept couldn't find it's own arse with both hands and told me the part I wanted didn't exist - until I showed it to him on a car in the forecourt. Same garage has a service manager who is arrogant in the extreme and refused to even inspect a car that had had Fiat warranty work done on it - spouted all sorts of excuses, all of which were pure fiction.

The other is more helpful, the parts dept will go out of their way to help, but the service dept don't ring when the car's ready and leave the car hacky inside and out after work (I don't mean they didn't wash it, I mean there was oil and grease inside and out on the car).

Fiat dealers generally have a bad reputation and it's their own fault.

But FIAT dealers are not run by FIAT AUTO, there run by companies who bought the franchise, who run it the way they want and not FIAT's way, blame the franchise company not FIAT, as there are some really good dealers out there. Mine I have to say is not without faults but everything that I can do to make it better is done as much as possible, and after being open for a year now, i believe it is a very good dealership.

It just sickens me to hear people bad-mouth FIAT, when its the indivdual dealers at fault.

Which one you work at mate, i'm just up the road from tooting in clapham.. :)

I work for FIAT/ ALFA ROMEO in kingston, CURRIE MOTORS, its been a FIAT dealer for a year now, as well as a ALFA agent.

Although all technicians go on the courses provided by FIAT, they are just knowledge/ training on systems that are found on current vehicles- they dont train you on ' how not to be a idiot '.

Dealers are now required to have ALL their technicians registered by the IMI, so that not just anyone can work on your car- but it will take time to assess all tech's and give them a grade, Level 1, 2, or 3.

At the end of courses, you go back to work with knowledge gained, but the process of 'how your dealer works' varies between franchises- and this is where the difference is felt.

Dealers are allowed to run their franchise however they want, as long as they meet certain standards/targets set by FIAT, and i have seen franchises taken away if dealers are failing.

At my particular dealer, we have 3x FIAT/ALFA tech's, 1 of which is a DET, we also have 3x others who were ex-toyota/nissan etc.

Time has to be taken to train all of us, but to get the toyota guys up to speed on systems like selespeed, 'cos toyota etc dont have this, and when something new comes out i.e 4x4 panda, the cars are released way before any training is available, so if a problem arises, you have to do the best you can with what you got, the DET can help you if a tech gets stuck, but your still expected to produce certain hours a week, as well as get the job fixed right first time, which can take you 2 hours to diagnose, 2 hours to fit, and you get 1.5hrs paid for.

I understand that there are morons in dealerships, but with the IMI register coming into effect, things can only get better.

The fact is that you can't blame the franchised company. If you had a bad meal at McDonalds who would you blame? McDonalds or the franchised company running that store? I myself would blame McDonalds for a bad experience. Why? Because they are the image of the company and ultimately responsible for making sure the end product is as good as elsewhere and up to their standards.

Good post fiattech, at least it helps us understand how the dealers should work!

My preferred dealership is Motorvogue, Northampton - again, this is a FIAT/ALFA franchise; I have heard that those having the two together are better garages, due to the better trained mechanics, or is this just a myth?

So far, I have had servicing and warranty work put through them, and can't really fault it - courtesy cars, washed cars, etc. My only bone of contention is the Sales staff, who knew nothing about the Ulysse when we bought if off them - does it really take 3 or 4 phonecalls to book a test-drive on what is their flagship model?!
