Hi all,

I know very little about cars. I mean, very little.

In my 'Y' reg Mia Punto, the battery light seems to come on and off randomly. It started doing it about a month ago. It's not been back on for a week or so now but it is still on my mind. My Punto has been struggling to start lately, mainly in the morning. No doubt this is partly down to the cold weather, rain etc. but it has struggled more than past years.

Anyhow, would this problem mainly be down to the battery, or more likely to be the alternator? Or anything else for that matter that I am completely unaware of.

Thanks in Advance Guys,

Lee C

A battery over 4 or 5 years old can be suspect either for not holding a charge fully or having a dodgy cell or 2, I'm pretty sure the light coming on may indicate an alternator problem though, or even a loose or corroded battery terminal. Start with the terminals, remove the battery and charge it off the car for 12 hours or so on trickle, clean the battery connection posts AND the connectors on the wires with a fine wire brush or 1000 grit wet & dry paper & re-fit, smear the connections once tightened up with petroleum jelly or copperslip type grease (NOT ordinary grease) and see if that fixes it.

Its been in there since I bought the car, in Feb 2007. Not sure how long before then. Ok thats helpful, thanks Ffoxy. Ill get to it at the weekend. I've looked up battery prices on Halfords, Kwik Fit etc. but how much would I be looking at for an alternator?

Cheers,

Hi, your problem also sounds like the v belt that drives the alternator might be a bit loose and might need adjusting...
No harm checking it.

If you find you need an alternator, I've got three good ones left over from various engine changes. I could get one to a meet for you, or send one by courier if you're in a rush.
