Right, I'm off to buy tyres today, I've managed to find somewhere cheap ~£65 for premium brand 205/55/r16 91v, which I'm chuffed with.

But, my question is, two of my tyres defo need replacing, ones down to the marks and the other is very nearly, but the other two although they have seen better days still have a little way to go to the marks, do you think (bearing in mind it is Christmas this week!) I should replace them all, or save a few quid until the other two need doing?

Oh, and do you reckon I should go for any particular brand? Or just the cheapest 'premiums' (pirelli etc), I know I can get budget tyres for around £50, but I don't really want them.

Cheers :)

Which tyres need replacing?

How about putting the two 'better' ones on the back, and get two 'new' ones on the front?

I would also avoid budget tyres, and stick with premium. At present, I got Pirelli P7000s I think on the front of mine, but not that convinced with them - I have been recommended to go with Contis next time round! My back tyres are Firehawk or something, and one needs replacing soon [like now] :(

Yeah, budget tyres are a definite no, thats pretty much what I'm thinking of doing, putting two new ones on the front.

Interesting you ain't impressed by pirelli, thats what I was thinking of getting put on.

It may be fact the fronts have worn pretty bad, and now car has since been laser aligned.

I think they seem ok in the dry, but not convinced in the wet.

Indeed, and with the roads in their current state, I find TC is on quite often! Plus I get the odd bit of understeer.

It was Nige who advised me to go for Contis, but I think there are different types - you will need to look on mytyres first.

Have to say the Goodyear Eagle F1s' that i've got are really good tyres.. I read somewhere that they were voted the best tyre in the world pound for pound at the moment.

I have just changed my Dunlops SP2000 for Pirelli P6000's. Done about 1k miles on them and I have to say i'm impressed with the difference! Its quieter and more grippy, but i haven't tried anything else.

dont go for budget tyres cause you will be putting your life in your hands

i once had budget tyres called smashing, they lived up to there name

i got p7000 on my sei and dad has got p6000 on his car, we both not convinced by them, although i do like the tread pattern on them

I got a 02 1.9 JTD 80bhp 3 door silver

I love the car...despite the fact i'm not impressed with the build quality. But it is alot of car for the money!

Might be tempted to Swap in for a brand new one when i clock up 75k on it.

Hi Vimto,

Indeed, it is a lot of car for the money! To be fair, I am very pleased with the build quality of mine, albeit with the odd niggle, although all sorted by the dealership.

Back on subject of tyres, I know for certain I won't be getting Pirellis next - I am not overly fussed about wear rate, more important to me is overall grip in the wet and dry.

Well my car is lacking the power and cornering ability as its a JTD. I'm sure you would drive your Abarth more aggresively than mine as it has less roll. So the tyres provide more than enough grip for my car in wet and dry as far as i'm prepared to push cos of the suspension.

Plus i clock up a fair few miles a year, so i prefer a mix or grip and hardwearing. I've been told is should be able to rack up 15k on these. Don't know how good that is suppose to be as my old car was a Rover 114gsi and the last tyres i bought were a £10 :D

Budget jobbies usually are a harder compound so they are hard wearing but offer poor grip in the dry and often no grip in the wet.

Get the best tyres for what you can afford.

James, if you've got the money then buy 4, you never know what's down the road.

Well, I just bought two Pirelli P6000's, £120 odd fitted, so I'm happy with that.

Had a bit of a chat with the guy, he said that they do Vreidsteins, which offer fantastic grip, BUT as I do quite a few motorway miles the grip would be wasted and they would wear out in no time, he said the pirellis are a decent alrounder, though admitted they don't offer the very best grip available, so all considered I went for them, which he think I should get 25k out of.

They said my better two are good for around another 2k at least, so I stuck them on the front, (reasoning that if the back end goes, you're shagged), and they reckon my pads are only around half worn

Vimto, is your car an import? I didn't think the JTD 80 was available on the 3door?

Cheers for all the help guys ;)

I had P6000s on the back of my Punto, and they we're ok, but then I stuck some Yoko A539s on the front and I was very very impressed with them tyres!

I have Contis on the front, and Rainsports on the back on my clio, not impressed with either! Will defo be changing to A539s or Eagle F1s if I can afford it as soon as they wear out!!

The key basically is don't skimp on tyres, it's just not worth it in the long run!! You'll be amazed how much difference there is in tyres, wear, performance, grip, etc!

James

My car was bought from here in Leeds Dixons Fiat. Its about 2 years old now. Its all official as i've had to go to the dealers several times.

But as far as the tyres i'm happy with mine...not sure about 25k though. Oh if you can find a place that fits brakes that you bought then go to http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/

Cheap brakes, my rear ones cost me 26 inc delivery and got someone to fit them for 20. (y) Fiat quoted me £127

Maybe its a model they only did for a short while, what trim is it? How do you find it, performance and economy wise? I love my JTD 115, I think its a good balance between performance and economy.

As for brakes, cheers for the link, I'll fit them myself ;)
