Have you thought about a diesel of some kind?
My 115BHP Stilo is group 5 but I reckon it's as quick down a back road as the Punto HGT (although not as nimble
).
It's also hugely quick in the mid range through the gears.

you could go for a bravo 1.6 or 1.8 they are really nice cars

Diesel's the way to go You cant beat the Stilo JTD, group 5 insurance, 115bhp standard, boosted up to 170bhp with a remap- and insurers will never know!

I originally ordered the Punto HGT JTD, it has the 1.9 8v Multijet engine, its a little quicker in standard tune than the Stilo JTD, but I prefer the Stilo's styling
Oh, and it IG 9, while the Stilo is IG 5

to keep the insurance low, id reccomend a punto 1.3 multijet. 0-60 times arent great but it does have loadsa mid range torque and is fast in real life

and its now released in Dynamic spec so has decent spec inside and out now. Launch model was just the Active.

1.3 Multijet Punto...
My lass has the Corsa CDTi which has the same engine, and I have to say it completely defies its stats, 0-60 is something like 13.5 secs, but please believe it drives so much better than that, up to around 50mph I have trouble pulling away from it.
It really is so much more punchy than the 1.2 punto, I can't stress enough, I think the reason its figures are crap is because of the gear changes needed to keep it on the boil.
I haven't driven the punto version, but the corsa version really is a sporty drive.
