Hi Phill16, you can find an awful lot out about this by using the Search function, check the oil & the water, is either becoming contaminated with the other? Do you get a lot of steam from the exhaust?

Sounds like a leaky Head gasket is pressurising the cooling system to me.

I second that - sounds like exhaust gasses getting in the cooling system.

Check for the usual symptoms - exhaust smell or oil film in the water, white stuff under the oil cap, and sign of water in the oil, steam or white smoke from exhaust.

Any of those confirms suspicions of head gasket, but it sounds like it to me anyway.

looked at the cap just oil did notice that when i was filling up with water it did look contaminated but thought it might be coolant in it seems to be sprits of water coming out the exhaust while ticking over

if it smells sweet then its more than likely the coolant...(ofc some will still do this if been on short trips/engine cold and cold outside)

hi if you have water coming out of the exhaust normaly within the first 15 mins of start up this is expecteed but if you have been driving about and the engine is warm eg 30 mins or temp gauge settled bout half way and you have water coming out of the back of the exhaust then you have the early symptoms of a blown head gasket. you might get 30 miles you might get 2000 miles out of the car but this def is a head gasket prob. better to get it checked out early other wise you might end up paying out more for the head to be reskimmed. dare i say the citroen word on here. after having a saxo for sometime i noticed water coming out of the exhaust didnt think anything to it thought it was just the cold weather and warm gases. started to lose power had alsorts of probs no sign of oil in coolant or coolant in oil only by saying to myself something isnt write and knowing how the car drove (might be hard having a new car) something clicked as it didnt feel rite i took it to a garage who i used and trusted for years and he confirmed that my head gasket had gone. said some of the common faults are lack in power which could also be a number of other reasons oil in coolant, coolant in the oil, loss of water ( eg over heating) or loss of water throught the exhaust normally within 20 mins of driving or engine warming up. better to pay 40 to 50 quid to get it checked out then having to pay 100 quid for reskim or second hand head then 40 quid for gasket set and labour on top roughtly 12 to 13 quid an hour. but deffernatly sounds like head gasket as that is linked to your heater as well. if you have any warrenty take it back if not its a case of fix it and pay a possible hefty bill prob why its been sold in first place.

bin to a garage said possable head gasket!! said would be bout £300-£400 with a new cam belt fitted(n)

Just did my head gasket on my Mk1, had gone between two sections of the water jacket and was pressurising the rad and blowing water out of the cap. £300-400 sounds about right with cam belt as well however if you feel confident enough i would try and do it yourself, i paid £35 for gasket set, £25 to have head skimmed and then £30 for belts. Took three days in total but could have done it in less if i had got spare jubilee clips around.
