hi all now i have 1.4 12v bravo having basically having a overhaul on the top end after ahead gasket going so whilst its apart decided to do everything i can to make that top end sweet, the mechanic doing most of the work rekons the hydraulic lifters just need being put into a vice clamped down to squeeze out all the old oil and **** and then rebedded and as a result he rekons that they should be good as new, however he did mention that this doesnt always work and if i want the engine to sound sweet i should consider getting all 12 replaced with new ones as engine was a bit tappety, the tappets and being replaced as it is anyways but the thought of shelling out like nearly another £100 on new lifters does bring a tear to my eye considering im only a part time worker at the mo so my wages aint all that great, what does eveyone else reccomend, could i get away with just giving the old ones a squeeze etc or would it be advisable to get new ones???????

since posting this i have gone for new lifters as everything else bar the camshaft and followers are going to be new so as im doing the tappets i might as well do these as the oil got cooked to the point new oil on the day was black and thick as tar by the end due to failed head gasket, but hey at least the top end will be almost brand new,
