My fiat 500 will allegedly be ready on Monday 24 Aug. THis was the agreed date when ordered 10 weeks ago or so.
It had not occurred to me at ordering time that this would be so close to the new registrations coming out on Sept 1st.
Can I insist they hold it till sept 1st to get the new reg?

As long as they haven't already registered it you should be fine.

really? no registration without insurance? SO I can just politely ask them to hold it another week? I am doing a scrappage trade in. MOT on old car valid till mid September so can't see a problem there.
I did mention holding out for another week to the dealer 2 weeks ago and he hummed and hawed as if it was a problem . So I can insist?

Scrogg, thanks for this, but why would the dealer make negative noises about this when I asked him?

They can't register it without insurance, so no chance of that happening.

humptybob, your dealer cannot force you to take the car this month, so if you want it on a '59' just tell them so.

Really? so how the pre-reg cars work then?
Surely they can register the car without insurance, as you need the registration for ur insurance.

Commission works month to month, He wants paid this month for your deal. ;)

Cars are registered to dealer when preregistered. so they can insure. as they are first owner.

They are registered to the dealershup, who have their own insurance.

No, they cannot.

All they can do is allocate a registration number.

They cannot register the car without valid insurance in the name of the registered keeper.

Yeah my dealer even asked for payment ASAP even though it was already agreed I was picking up on the 1st Sept. Cheeky!
That's different.

You have entered into a contract to buy the car, and the dealership has paid Fiat in full for it on your behalf, so why should they be out of pocket just because you don't want to take delivery until the month after it arrives?

Most dealerships have very little in the way of cash reserves, so waiting to be paid for cars they have paid for can cause them problems. They can't tell Fiat, or their staff, or there utilities providers, or their landlords (if they rent their premises) etc they will pay them next month...

Some dealerships won't register a new car until it is paid for by the customer, and it is only a matter of time before that becomes the norm.

I will never, even if I live to be a 100, understand what this demented fascination for the latest number plate is. Seriously. Who gives a ****? You bought the car to enjoy. Go enjoy it.

Is there really a whole subculture of people who sit in the driveway getting excited about what plate they have?

Can anyone point me to a single case where their life was better, more fulfilled or greatly enhanced by having a plate issue next month as opposed to this month? Especially when its applied to a car that was built last month or the month before.

Please? Someone explain this to me.

This is something that amuses me about the UK. This whole plate culture. In Western Australia any car can wear any plate so no one is really all that fussed about plates. Yet in the UK there seems to be this idea that if you have a later reg that it's better. It's funny really and shows how not into cars a lot of people are. People seem to have the view that a newer reg car is automatically better than an old one and some people even get timeless plates because they're so embarassed at the age of their car. In the end most car people will be able to tell the age of your car from the lights, trim, wheels etc etc and why be bothered about the other 95% of people who are clearly retards of the highest degree?

It beats me, and I've been selling new cars since 1997.

(And yes, I am waiting until 1st September to register my new Bravo :p )
:p

I think that's part of it. A lot of people just do it because it's the done thing. With my car I figured that I just wanted to enjoy my car and never would have thought of delaying delivery. I'm not planning to sell it sill it's ready for scrapping anyway.....

I'm doing it because it's a demonstrator (I change my car every 6 months) so resale value is important as it will still be the current plate when we sell it in February.

But it does baffle me why it is so important to people that buy there own cars and keep them for a number of years, especially as dealerships will often do a deal on the price to offset the resale issue when a new plate is imminent.

Fair enough then. If you're doing it to get more money out of something who is stupid enough to pay more for a car registered in September over one registered in August then I aplaud you for what is effectively tax on the stupid and incompetent ;) Given the choice between two identical cars one with an 08 reg and a 58 reg where the 58 reg one has a months more warranty yet is a few hundred pounds more expensive you know which one I'm going to take ;)

Which is why we register our demonstrators in March and September instead of January and July as Fiat expect us to.

They cost us the same regardless of when we register them, but our way we get more back for them.
