Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone can help me solve my plight. Was sitting in the Alfa GT ;) with the other half, and I started to ponder...

New Bravo and Punto, right?

The Bravo, which incidentally only comes in a five door. Okay.

The Punto, which can come in a three door. Okay.

Here's the problem.

The original Bravo was the three door version, and the BravA was the five door version. So firstly, shouldn't the new Bravo have been called the BravA? Because technically, that's what they've made.

Secondly, they look exactly the same, when it comes down to it.
Same shape, unlike the original Bravo and Punto, where the Bravo had an extremely large 'bum' and the Punto jutted out at the back in a completely different way. Totally different lights, with only a similarity at the front.

These two look nearly identical, if you look at it from a very basic point of view.

So consquently, why did they name them and reinvent them as the Grande Punto and the Bravo?

Thank youuu :)

Fiat apparantly decided to use the Bravo name on the new Bravo because it was well regarded by Fiats customers & it wanted to move on from the unsucesful Stilo badge.

It is strange that the old Bravo was 3 door and the new one 5 door, but the new one does resemble the old Bravo from the rear and the old BravA from the side, so i think Fiat have been quite clever. It is also true that of the old Bravo & Brava, the Bravo is the one that is most highly regarded.

You see far more old battered Bravas than you do Bravos, which kinda backs up how much people like them.

While the Bravo/Brava naming thing was cute, there is only one style of new Bravo, and "Bravo" means more to more of the world than "Brava".

The Grande Punto was called that rather than just "Punto", as the old Punto was still available for a while in some markets after the introduction of the GP.

As for the GP and Bravo looking similar, isn't that the point? Manufacturers want their cars to have a brand identity, so you can immediately recognise a Fiat as a Fiat, and a Ford as a Ford, etc...

I guess you'd liked them to have been called the Bravo & Brava, but while the old Brava & Bravo were built on the same platform and were launched at the same time, the GP & the Bravo are different platforms and were launched about 2 years apart.

It is odd that Fiat chose not to make a 3 door version of the new Bravo, especially as the old 3 door Bravo & the 3 door Stilo were both more loved than the 5 door versions. But to be honest the styling of the new Bravo is so good that there really is no need for people to want a 3 door.

Id say the Bravo name must be up there with the Panda badge in terms of being highly regarded by the public. Both old and new Bravos & Pandas have been really credible & respected. In the case of the Bravos particularly, highly under-rated too.

The Punto badge might be more popular & probably the first thing alot of people think of when someone says 'Fiat', but it has its enemies too. The Bravo & Panda are the ones that prove Fiat can make genuine good cars & probably have few enemies, ie knowone is going to turn around and say 'that was a sh*t car'.

GP is a punto, cheap and chearful.

If you compare a 96 punto with a 96 brava/o they're a level of refinement apart. Same goes for the Bravo/GP.

New Bravo has 3door/coupé looks with the practicality of a 5 door. It could only have been made better by putting Alfa 156 style 'hidden' door handles on it.

The new Bravo certainly brings back memories of the old Bravo which is good and is definately a vast improvement on the 5 door Stilo for looks even though technically, it is the same car. What Fiat need to do now is introduce an estate version. The Stilo MW may be a better load lugger than the Marea Weekend but the Weekend hit the mark for style. That addition would certainly help Fiat sales.
