Hi, im new to the forum, been really impresssed with level of knowledge on offer here.

i have a 1.9 jtd, 2001 multipla, about 76000mile for my sins, it has had all the classic symptoms of a clogged egr, intermittent loss of power, even with full throttle opening and then suddenly takes off with a whoosh after a few or more seconds.

So seeing that lots of fellow fiat owners on here have had success with cleaning their egr valves and regaining predictable power i set to and seperated the two halves of the valve and cleaned it and allowed it to dry. Now once all put back together, the engine turned over, started for a few seconds then bogged down and stalled and wouldnt restart. so, i took the egr off again, made sure it was dry and clean and moving freely, checked i had not knocked off any sensor connectors etc, gasket is in place between two halves of egr valve, put it all bck together and again, started briefly, then bogged down and died and wouldnt restart. prior to this it has always started on the button with no problems, just the intermittent loss of power.

I would appreciate any help offered!! As my wife needs the car for tomorrow!

I wasnt sure where to post thie so did it in general fiat forum, but if i have put it in the wrong place my apologies!

Thanks

Luke

Hello mate, I got the same problem, I found a hole in the pipe leading to the EGR valve, but im replacing the valve and pipe just to make sure, I was given a test to do to see if it was my EGR valve, but I found the hole first and when I covered it it seemed to be fine. I would honestly recommend buying one from new. If this is all fine, check you airflow to your turbo. Making sure its all clear and nothing is blocking the flow to the turbo. (y)

Thanks Lee, im just a bit confused that it never had a problem starting prior to me cleaning the egr valve, now it wont start at all? Do you know why that might be?

I didnt open mine just incase I had this problem. Im ordering a new one, so when I take the old one off im gonna open it up to clean it, then put it back on. If it works i'll have a spare EGR valve, if not, i'll have a new one to put on. But its worth a try. I would say to do that tbh.

i finally got it to start after turning it over for about five seconds at a time and leaving a few seconds between and then there was a fair amount of white smoke coming out of the exhaust, so now i have turned it off and am even more concerned.

was yours white smoke and then failing to rev up?

It just doesnt seem logical that i clean the valve, which was dirty and sticking, and now it is moving freely, but car woiuldnt start and once it did a lot of white smoke is coming out the exhaust and it wont rev up?

My brain hurts!

Yeah, mine struggles to go past 1800 revs when I start the car, but I rev it till it goes over 2500 revs, which is when my turbo kicks in. I get white smoke, but not alot. Take it for a run somewhere, maybe about a 5 mile journey around home, just get the valve working. If it still fails I would get a new EGR valve bud.

thanks for your help lee, just tried taking it for a drive and it was not very driveable, very slow below 2000rpm and then above that only accelerates a little faster than below 2000rpm with quite a bit of white smoke.

Any other help appreciated!!

thanks

It was a electrical one, back of engine, i seperated the solenoid and valve assembly to clean.

Thanks T14086, why would cleaning the egr have caused this fault, given i did not touch anything else? Also the engine was not turned on at all with any connectors etc unplugged so i dont think it would have pushed the engine into limp home mode?

thanks
