I tried to get FIAT to cover brake pads as I thought they wore out too quickly
but they didn't want to know as they were a wear item. However, a gearbox should be a different matter as it should last the life of the car which, in my estimation should be 15 years and 150,000 to 200,000 miles. I would certainly
have a go at getting them to repair/replace, even if it's with a recon item. I think I would ask this question in the Stilo section as somebody else may have
had the same problem. If you really don't get any satisfaction then I think What Car or Auto Express consumer columnists may be interested as they have taken on readers' car problems before and got satisfaction for the customer. I don't know how old you are, but if you're young I might get me Dad to take it in as if they are looking for a reason not to help you then young/inexperienced/aggressive might be the one. There's nothing like a bit of stereotyping.
