Im miffed.

Following a quote from HIC to insure my car with a 1242cc engine at the same price I paid at the time, I fitted a 1242cc engine.

Rang back today to get it insured (admittedly 2 months later)...and the price has gone up by 60%. They want £1500 for me, fully comp![:(!][:(!]

I rang a few other places (Performance Direct and Adrian Flux- specialist modified car insurers), and they're all looking for the same amount.

Thing is, its keeping the 1242, there is no way that that engine is coming out soon unless it absolutely has to, and it has to be insured in my name- i dont want to burden anyone with it if I kill it!

Any ideas on other insurance companies worth a try?

boot delock soon, Induction in development!

Hmm...Idea.

Insure it with a parent as first driver, discussions bought this up as a possible. Might cause problems (3 cars owned by 3 people), but me building up NCD isnt that vital as I have 2yrs already, but I was advised that the situation should change in a year or so... Its worth a go I suppose, cos I can see that being cheaper (at least less than for me individually)

The one thing going against you is your age mate, at 19 you fall in the biggest risk category nad tbh things probably won't get better for quite some years.

Have you noticed tho there is always someone who manages to get an amazing quote? At lad at the gym is the same age as me, 24, and is paying £1400 fully comp for an EVO VIII FQ300! I reckon he must have told a few porkies while getting cover, which is stupid really. But if his cover is genuine, fair play;)

U could try TPFT? I know its a risk, but if take the risk you will hopefully not need to shell out, if u go fully comp you lose that money regardless.

I do a similar thing, tho I am still fully comp I have a high excess.

Be careful with going as anything but policy holder and main driver; 99% of the time it doesn't allow you to use it for commuting (which is why a lot of people have a car obviously!). "How would they know I was commuting?" Well, they might not, they might not even ask if it is a low value claim, but you can bet your bottom doller it won't be.

All i mean is that you should make sure it covers you for what you need it for.

Hmm..its staying fully comp, simple as.

James- Yes I agree Im in a stinker of a situation given my age, I just cant see how my premium can have increased by 65% in 2 months! Unless theres some mad "blip" on the market...its just not feasible for that too happen.

But im not limited to the problem, my mate contacted the same underwriters about his Metro Turbot (most places wont touch him (no NCD and same age \ locn as me)), and he had the same problem.

Given it has to be a unusual condition (2 months later cant mean £600 extra without a good reason), I reckon it'll pass. Im going to investigate insuring it under a parent for a while, and transfer back to my name once it subsides

Maybe they gave you incorrect information in the first place?

Perhaps, but I was advised of the quote's validity for about a month!
But having said that, when I rang thru yesterday, I changed nothing, only the policy start date[?]

Did you get a quote the first time? If so, it might be valid for 3 months....I know most of the companies I called around stated so but then again, they weren't specialists.

Oh yeah, first time was a totally legitimate quote, but I was explicitly advised at the time of quotation that it would only be valid for a month at most!

Some of the larger brokers (CIS etc) gave me quotes stagnant for around 3 months! :)

Have u tried CIS then? They have given me the best quote out of over 30 insurance companies i rang.

Also Liverpool Victoria were quite good too.

Not this time...will do though...they quoted me £1600 last time, but were the only policy that includes driving other cars.

I doubt LV would like my engine swap

A bloke on PSC converted his 75SX to a GT and was insured on LV, the thing is it only counted as an engine mod, which he had already paid out for with the induction kit!
