Have just taken my car to main dealer for service. Have had 2 problems with car whistling noise from engine on accelerating and intermittent starting. I do not have starting problems every day Garage tells me I need a new turbo at a cost of £750 and a new starter motor. The car has only done 39000 miles. Do you think the garage wants to make extra money from me re complete replacement of parts or would I be better getting second opinion?. Apart from the whistling the car drives well and the whistling does not affect performance:confused:

turbos are supposed to whistle, if it is boosting as it should then you would be mad to change it.

only replace the starter motor if the engine does not turn when it fails to start AND you know the battery is fine AND you have checked the main earth strap. a scrapyard starter motor would be a good idea, it'll cost you £20-40 depending on your model.

in future try to mention which car you have, and which engine.

Thank you for that information .My car is Fiat punto multi jet 1.3 diesel 2003 reg. The whistling only started about two weeks ago but I will live with it rather than forking out that sort of money. Thanks again

in that case the problem is probably due to a leak somewhere after the turbo. have you noticed your boost gauge reading lower than usual lately?
