Hi im looking at a car that is currently on Jersey plates, its only been over for a month or so and the English owner has the certificate from Jersey to say its been properly exported and has the MOT.

He says it dosent have to be taxed and can remain on the Jersey plates for 1 year before you have to swap to UK plates and pay tax, is anyone familiar with this?

Also he said the insurance is not affected with it being a Jersey car either.

Ive never done something like this before so i wonder if anyone has any advice for me?

Thanks

Donna:D

You will probably need to re - register the car as a UK car see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motorin...hicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/index.htm for more info. As for paying tax, if your using the UK roads then you have to pay for the privilage.

Thanks that link looks helpful, i see from the link it says it must be registered asap after being imported, the guy selling said it can be left on the Jersey plate for a year but that dosent look correct as far as the DVLA is concerned :D

Would you bother with the hasstle of buying and registering /importing a Seicento Turbo or just try and get one here? the reason i ask is if it has to go through an SVA test i dont know if the Turbo will pose a problem as i know with Jap imports they are supposed to be standard cars

Thanks again

You can drive a non uk car over here for upto a year if like in the situation of visiting, but after a year our law says every car needs an mot and you can only Mot a car thats uk registered.

A SVA only applies to kit cars and 1 off type cars, having a turbo is a modification so a basic MOT would apply. As long as you have a UK MOT certificate, a V5 or Jersey equivelent then take that to a local DVLA office and they can place the car on the UK system and issue you with a V5 and UK number plates.

If the price is right and you want the car then it shouldn't be too much of a hassle i wouldn't of thought.

Excellent thanks he says he is going to MOT it on Friday, so if he can MOT it it shouldnt be too hard to get it registered, i just didnt want to buy it then find out i couldnt it it all legal due to the turbo etc

Thanks mate you set my mind at rest (y)

So he may find that on Friday when he trys to MOT it they may get him to register it first?

Think i will put a deposit down on it (y)

When I've tried to Mot french cars etc that are visiting, it shows as no record of vehicle held by dvla - through the mot computerisation you can create a new record that tells dvla of this vehicle and starts things into motion. (y) With regard of the turbo, as long as it meets emissions standards thats it.
