Are ze polis taking the mick or what?

Apparently from 1st of Jan 2004 its illegal to have window tints darker than 20% VLT (Visible Light Transmittance) forward of the B Pillar (eg: Front side and windscreen).

Can anyone confirm this? Cos otherwise my Cinq isnt being tinted![:(!]...and we dont want that, do we???:):)

Tom (AofB)

GrpN Catback Exhaust system on...rattles like f**k, but very nice!!!

i think its 40%, an also if it was tinted before that date it'll be ok, my m8s got limo black all around on his, the cops pulled him over but they couldnt do anythin because it was brought in before the law was made

hi

i have got 30% tints on the fronts, and also have some very useful info for you all.
My mate is a plod, and he has a nice modded 105 rallye. Anyway, he was on a speed trap thing the other day with the chief bloke for car regs. My mate asked bout this "new law" that came in, and apparently, ther is no such law. cops just look at cars, and like to be able to see thru the fronts.

So tint away, just make it so there slightly see thru, i.e 30%-40% max

enjoy fellow modders.

I thought that as long as the cops can see through the front relatively easy and note that someone is in there [i.e. not full limo tint], they don't mind. I haven't heard of this new law.

Family member is a copper, and when I had my Ulysse film tinted, he actually asked why I hadn't done the fronts as well!!?!?!

Fiat Ulysse 2.2JTD Eleganza, 53 plate, with options :D Angel Tuning [see ad that has now gone] tuned ;) Photos and a 'better' avatar still to be sorted - there is always tomorrow

round here the cops have a 'tintometer' which will test how much light comes thru, and if its not enough they will make u remove the tints. if they want an excuse to pull u over, they'll use the tints

if the law is no darker than 20% forward of the B piller.. wonder what they do about the RX8 :D

Cinq Sporting - and yes, its broom yellow!

the letter of the law. hope this helps.

Light Transmission of Glazing - Summary of requirements (Summaries of construction and use regulations for motor vehicles – Department for Tansport )
Motor vehicles first used between 1/6/1978 and 31/3/1985 must have windows which allow at least 70% of light to pass through. Motor vehicles first used on or after 1/4/1985 must have windscreens which allow at least 75% of light to pass through - all other windows must admit at least 70% of light.

Where such a vehicle is stopped and the window tints applied are such that the Visible Light Transmission level, when measured using an approved device falls to below prescribed levels, the following enforcement guidelines have been agreed with, and recommended, by the Government.
Above 30% Visible Light Transmission (Less Severe Window Tints)
The owner or driver of such a vehicle will be required to have the tinted film removed from the windows under the direction of either a Rectification Notice or a Delayed Prohibition Notice, A period of grace will apply for a limited number of days (normally ten) during which time the vehicle may be driven whilst the rectification work is to be completed. In either case, the vehicle will need to be inspected by either a Police Officer or Vehicle Inspectorate Officer to confirm that the glass has been restored to a compliant condition. Prosecution is unlikely in such circumstances provided the vehicle owner complies fully.
Below 30% Visible Light Transmission (Excessively dark Window Tints)
The owner or driver of such a vehicle may be issued with an Immediate Prohibition Notice and immediately prevented from driving the vehicle on public roads until the tints have been removed and either a Police Officer or Vehicle Inspectorate Officer confirms that the glass has been restored to a compliant condition. It is also possible, depending on the severity of the offence, that the owner may be prosecuted for driving a vehicle in a non-roadworthy or even a dangerous condition with the potential for Penalty Points and a Fine.
Driving such a vehicle on public roads before the tints have been removed and before a Prohibition Notice has been lifted will be a serious offence and the owner or driver is likely to be prosecuted.

I've just had my black bravo tinted, and with the new law had the fronts done so there just legal and the backs limo. And it now looks like a van!!! So I am getting the fronts done again darker!

I've been told by the tint guys there is one policeman in Sussex that hates tinted windows and will make you remove them, but no-one else is bothered, and it differs where you live. In Norfolk they dont give a monkies!!

I think you've just got to go for it and hope for the best!!!

It may just be me, but I like to be able to see through a car when I need to. eg: When I want to turn left onto a road and a car is beside me waiting to turn right, I should be able to see if a car is coming so I can know if I can pull out. With 25% or so tints I can see enough through thier car and all is well, much darker and it gets harder, meaning I have to pull forward to see or wait for them. I pull forward, they pull forward, I pull forward etc etc...

And then there's the case where you can't see if someone is in the car that you can only see one side of who has left the hazzrads on - are they pulling out? Are they stopped? Is anybody even in the car?

Also, when folowing a car, I find it can be useful to be able to see through the rear window, car and windscreen to the car infront of that. Advance warning from the high level brakelight. With the limo rear window you can't. It's like following a van, people carrier or 4x4 - you HAVE to leave a bigger gap so you can stop in an emergency. From a safety point of view excessive tinting can be dangerous, everyone else just has to see round the tinted car not through it. That's why there are the laws. In practice everyone gets on with it and there can't be many accidents where tints were the cause.

Sure tints make the car look better, except those tacky mirror ones on lexus 4x4s - they look cr@p! And there is the bonus that prying people can't see inside - unfortunatly that could mean they break a window to see if there's a nice stereo or something else worth nicking. :(

Dark tints give the police another excuse to pull you over. I'd rather be carrying on with my journey...

well I have booked mine in to be tinted.
I will get it as much as I like and if I get pulled I will lock the doors close my eyes and use the old trick I used to use when I was a kid, "If I can't see them, They can't see me"!

and he said to his himself, "wow! what was that thing, it went like a blurr. I wish I had a Punto".
