Can anyone give any clues? 85S Regatta intermitttantly miss-fireswhen the throttle is pushed down slightly during acceleration. If you push the throtle down further it smoothes out. Then for no reason it will run fine for the next few times it is driven. Then with no warning either while you are driving, or the next time you get in it will miss again. If you pull the choke out a little it runs smooth albiet ar a high idle. Have checked ignition timing, idle mixture, drained fuel bowl, replaced fuel filter, replaced spark plugs????? Any ideas? It sounds like a carby problem to me?

Hi, had exactly the same problem on an 85 I once owned. The carbs are of a very poor quality and get easily choked up with gunge and swarf from the poor metal in the carb! Just either dismantle the carb and clean it or blow all the jets out with an airline and she might be OK again. On mine a real good blast at high speed used to clean it out!

I'll goive it a go on the highway first.
Also the speedo registers way below the actual speed, any sometimes won't work at all. The tacho works all the time but also shows way below the actual revs??

These FIATS sure do have some quirky ways, but for a 1985 car is was ahead of its time in many ways.

The symptoms you describe sounds like classic "dirt in the carburrettor bowl" but instances of that are pretty rare these days - fit a see-thru fuel filter (Halfords) and see how much crud they actually catch - not much.

I'd look at the condition of the points themselves (not just the timing) to see if they're pitted or arcing.

However, if I had to bet on it with my own money, I'd say you will solve this if you stick a new condensor on it.
