Ken Livingstone is planning to use tax payer's money to build an enormous mosque costing an estimated 100M in the docklands. Wouldn't it be better to spend the money on a new hospital or improved transport facilities??
Personally I think it's taking things way too far, I am not racist by any means, and I have no problem with peace loving muslims, but we need other stuff much more than we need this.

Don't turn this thread into some kind of Nazi assault on all people who weren't born here. Just sensible answers concerning the money that will be invested in this etc.

BIGGER THAN ST PAULS!!!
The plan is for the mosque to be so big that people flying in from all over the world for the 2012 Olympics will it see it as the biggest landmark in London , bigger than St Pauls, Westminster Abbey or Wembley Stadium

Take a second to cast your vote in The Evening Standard on-line poll to determine public opinion about whether a mega mosque should be built for the Olympics.

The vote so far is 62 % in favour. It looks like the Muslim
community is casting its vote in droves.

Here's the poll to vote

so far i can't find any references to tax payer coffers being used to fund the building. it would appear so far that the monies will come from the mosques backers in the middle east, and private donations. if you could post up sources, would be of great help.

the other thing that is of more concern is the application process, quite removed from the buildings purpose, that would seem to have been removed from teh public realm and passed on to a semi autocratic body, the london thames gateway development corporation, who make the final decision, with no requirement for public input, or appeal.

this again is a return to the same themes surrounding the london olympic bid, and the wholesale bulldozing of land and opinion to get a flawed plan executed.....

Thanks for the fixed link Stu, I have edited the first post now using your link (y)

One thing I have found is that each time you click the link you can vote  :slayer:

just three articles so far, the first indicates a tiny organisation with a turnover of about £500000 trying to raise anything up to £300mill for the project.....

the flaw with the poll, is so far no viable confirmed information on almost any aspect of what and why you should even bother to vote.

that looks cool

should bring people from what ever beliefs just to see it

I have to remind myself what country I'm living in.

A country that has freedom of religion and in which Christianity has been in massive delcline for the last 50 years?

As Jai says, if no government money is going towards it what is the problem? Personally if tax money was going towards any new religious building I would disagree, unless to support the community only. I also don't agree with the active pushing of any religion in the UK, regardless of type, but whilst other religions can keep trying, I suppose there's no reason why Muslims can't.
