That time of year again...

When all students begin looking for next year's place to live. It's stressful, full of time wasting and never fun!

Anybody want to find me a nice 1 bed self contained flat in Manchester for 300-400 PCM?

Re: That time of year again...

oh i miss those days. trying to tell that loser that you dont want him to live with you, trying to convince your ex who you still fancy that it wont be weird if she moves in, trying to make sure you only get people who are able and willing to pay rent, making sure the house is close to a boozer and corner shop (distance to uni is irrelevant), and trying to beat the other suckers to the best places. then arguing about who gets what bedroom before you even negotiate with the landlord or sign a contract. man i miss student life.

And all those reasons are EXACTLY why I am going alone this year, plus I see how much my friends bitch about each other from living together!

Re: That time of year again...

That's the rental price in much Manchester for a 1 bedroom place with separate lounge/kitchen/bathroom. Ideally I am looking for £350, and of course being a student I am council tax exempt!

Of course we're talking student standard here, not young professional standard...

I could get a studio flat for circa 280£ in a bad area if I tried hard enough. Although apparently my sister said that Manchester house prices for students are getting silly - with her paying little more in Guildford.

I work in PW values unfortunately My first year accommodation (2004) was the most expensive at Manchester available (£72/week, 40 week contract), now it's £86!

Funny you say that because Guildford, where my sister lives, is in Surrey (right??) and she has gasped at the costs now in Manchester, although I obviously wouldn't know how to compare!

It's important to remember also that these prices will typically be the more deprived areas in Manchester!

Re: That time of year again...

I saw a 2 bed place for £350 in Manc area but it must be rubbish for that money! I also only need one bedroom funnily enough!

It's so hard to look for places when you're 100 miles away.

I would, but that means we would have to relocate the business and it might not pick up.

I like cheap stuff.

Re: That time of year again...

Ah but earnings are lower of course. In London the average graduate chemical engineer gets £27.5k in their first year. In other places close to chemical engineering businesses (e.g. oil, gas or water facilities) it can be £26.5k. In some places in Scotland it's just £17-19k!

Re: That time of year again...

true, but my own research suggests the extra wages i can get elsewhere will not be enough to pay the extra living costs or to keep me in the same standard of living. thats why i'm still stuck here.

you can still get a nearly new 3 bed detached house with a driveway and garage and front and rear gardens in a nice new estate for £130k. i live in one. down south 130k seems to get a 2 bed terrace with street parking. i cant justify that kind of drop in standard of living, and they talk funny.

Re: That time of year again...

£135k in cambridge where the jobs are =

£135 in durham where good jobs are hard to find =

there's little choice in my mind. every time i travel away on business i find myself checking the local estate agents and mostly swearing out aloud at the prices. even the crapper places in telford were shockingly expensive. cornwall has nothing and they still charge the earth for a terraced crapper.
