When all students begin looking for next year's place to live. It's stressful, full of time wasting and never fun!

Anybody want to find me a nice 1 bed self contained flat in Manchester for £300-400 PCM? ;)

oh i miss those days. trying to tell that loser that you dont want him to live with you, trying to convince your ex who you still fancy that it wont be weird if she moves in, trying to make sure you only get people who are able and willing to pay rent, making sure the house is close to a boozer and corner shop (distance to uni is irrelevant), and trying to beat the other suckers to the best places. then arguing about who gets what bedroom before you even negotiate with the landlord or sign a contract. man i miss student life.

And all those reasons are EXACTLY why I am going alone this year, plus I see how much my friends bitch about each other from living together!

That's the rental price in much Manchester for a 1 bedroom place with separate lounge/kitchen/bathroom. Ideally I am looking for £350, and of course being a student I am council tax exempt!

Of course we're talking student standard here, not young professional standard...;)

I could get a studio flat for circa 280£ in a bad area if I tried hard enough. Although apparently my sister said that Manchester house prices for students are getting silly - with her paying little more in Guildford.

I work in PW values unfortunately :( My first year accommodation (2004) was the most expensive at Manchester available (£72/week, 40 week contract), now it's £86!

It is oop north though

Funny you say that because Guildford, where my sister lives, is in Surrey (right??) and she has gasped at the costs now in Manchester, although I obviously wouldn't know how to compare!

It's important to remember also that these prices will typically be the more deprived areas in Manchester!

My mum rents the shop and the living accomodation above it for £350 a month. :D

I saw a 2 bed place for £350 in Manc area but it must be rubbish for that money! I also only need one bedroom funnily enough!

It's so hard to look for places when you're 100 miles away.

Ah but earnings are lower of course. In London the average graduate chemical engineer gets £27.5k in their first year. In other places close to chemical engineering businesses (e.g. oil, gas or water facilities) it can be £26.5k. In some places in Scotland it's just £17-19k!

true, but my own research suggests the extra wages i can get elsewhere will not be enough to pay the extra living costs or to keep me in the same standard of living. thats why i'm still stuck here. :(

you can still get a nearly new 3 bed detached house with a driveway and garage and front and rear gardens in a nice new estate for £130k. i live in one. down south 130k seems to get a 2 bed terrace with street parking. i cant justify that kind of drop in standard of living, and they talk funny.

there's little choice in my mind. every time i travel away on business i find myself checking the local estate agents and mostly swearing out aloud at the prices. even the crapper places in telford were shockingly expensive. cornwall has nothing and they still charge the earth for a terraced crapper.

in banbury, anything less than 130ish wont get you anymore than a 1bed flat

so unless wages are about 300% better than where i live i cant move there, unless i'm willing to have a worse standard of living. i think thats why the north east has far more people moving here than moving away. you get a lot more for your money, and you only get a little bit less money. my job is 20k, most similar jobs i saw down south were £25-30k, and in london £40k. it just aint worth the extra money. people in london may earn twice as much as me but i have twice their standard of living. cars cost noticably less here too!

same where i live Ghost, 130k equates to a dive really, if your lucky on street parking in a dodgy area. ive been looking for the past couple of years, but cant afford a place on my own, and even sharing with mates, alot of them dont earn enough to bump up the borowing power.

even renting here is rediculous (plus i wouldnt do it as its a money pit...) 400 a month gets you a v v v small 2 roomed place (ex hotel rooms converted, on knocked through to the other...) and they are so poorly built aswell (i had one for a lil bit before the x booted me out :()

sounds like a crap deal.

£350pcm round the corner from me gets you
Semi-detached Property
Fully Double Glazed
Gas Central
Lounge
Fully fitted Kitchen
Two bedrooms
Gardens to the front and to the rear
Fully Furnished
Driveway

even poor people get a driveway in the north east. and a garden to have bbq's in the rain (northern tradition)

not even though about mine yet.

not sure if I'll even make this year (should do, but if I don't pass easily then I'm not sure its worth continueing).

if I do, just go into halls for a 3rd year running/

tis mint:worship:

student houses are OK, BUT you don't meet as many people, or get exposed to as many girls and dodgy parties etc. hence I'm staying in halls again
