in glasgow at the moment, never really thought of it before but there's a huge difference in the cars here and cars in ireland. for a start in ireland you will never see Protons, Peroduas, old hyundais or Kias and you'll go a long time before you see a black cab. sure you'll see some of the classic london ones, but you'll never see those metrocabs that seem to be built from various transits, cortinas, and escorts. you know, the really square ones!
most pre 2000 cars in ireland will be base spec with the smallest engine size, due to the ridiculous tax system, so it's strange to see old caveliers and mondeos with leather and more! also ireland don't go for 5 door hatchbacks the same way our neighbours do, favouring saloons. it's bizzare that there are such differences!

don't go for 5 door hatches?

brava owner?

but yeah i know what you mean, tis strange going to other coutries to see the different cars (often more interesting than the scenery!)

the likes of the mondeo, avensis and vectra. i'd say bout 95% of avensis are saloon bit less for vectra and mondeo,

vw jettas and ventos are very popular over here, mostly diesel. astra saloon vastly outsells 3 and 5 door, lots of bravas though cos base model had smaller engine to base marea

oh yeah, no vauxhalls in ireland. just opels!

and if you want to buy a Doblo in the Republic of Ireland forget it. They don't sell them in passenger form. The specs are different as well. The new Panda for example is only available in 1.1 Active, 1.2 Dynamic or 1.2 Emotion spec, in the UK you have 1.1 Active, 1.2 Dynamic, 1.2 Dynamic Aircon, 1.2 Dynamic Skydome, 1.2 Dynamic Sound or 1.2 Eleganza.

And what is this fashion down south of making the cars look like vans by colouring the rear windows? [?]

it's not tinting the windows, due to our odball tax system you can buy 3 door hatches as commercial vehicles, and pay bout 200 euro annual road tax as opposed to 500, they have a flat load floor and have metal instead of windows which are body coloured

the Renault supervan (19 based commercial) was the top selling renault in the 90's. and the golf van is available with 130bhp and 6 speed box, and the best thing is it's a van so the insurance is tiny!

the differences in cars here and cars in UK are mostly due to the tax system which goes only on engine size

Are those REALLY the cost of tax for a car?! I am horrified! Even in euro that seems like a joke!
