Forgot about HIIT XD the only downside to a higher metabolism is increased hunger, but then again if someone is wanting to lose wight then their diet MUST be on track.

Boddahchris: That's an interesting abstract but what it doesn't mention is the % change of each group or means. For example, participants may have a lower body fat % and be part of the 'endurance' group, where the 'endurance and weight resistive' group may have higher mean body fat %'s meaning they have more mass to lose. It also doesn't mention lifestyle activity levels.

This is probably me being critical and this info may well be in the journal, if so do correct me :)

I'm not sure, Westcott has won a fair few awards for his research so i'm pretty sure his study was accurate.

However this isn't the source i learned of this technique from. Its been mentioned a few times in articles (in body building mags in particular), i used it to shift a stubborn bit of fat, and it worked for me. dropped from 77Kg to 70.5Kg in about a month.

However i worked out 5 nights a week, pushed myself to my limit, ate just enough to keep my metabolism ticking over and i felt like crap! wasn't particularly "healthy", but i got the results.

Now after switching to weigh lifting only i'm back up to 76Kg!!

Well.. anybody.. looking to rekindle this..
Freebo..?
I don't have any real interest in this but here's a wee contribution. I'm about 5'8" and feel most well when my weight is around eleven and a half to twelve stone. I weigh myself before getting in the shower and if I notice my weight creeping up I just eat less. Don't really change what I eat except maybe cutting out any crisps and chocolate, just eat smaller portions. I went up to just over twelve and a half stone over Christmas/New Year now down to around twelve and a quarter and will be back on target within about a month. When I was much younger a good friend once said to me that if, naked, you stand up straight and look down, you find you can't see your "best friend" then it's time to loose weight! Somewhere in there there is a morsel of good advice!

I got dragged along ( as Des)to the local Library.
Wandered about aimlessly for 20 mins..

Got a few leaflets..and Saw the end of a Book from a Scandinavian bloke whose stuff Ive liked on TV.
Book is BOLD PRINT.. (still can't read it though) I lied.. Ive done 10 pages in 5 weeks.

Leaflets.. dietary advice..self help.etc.

Not bad.

Biggest result.. Panda driver got 12 weeks free Weigh****chers.. via the local council.. Last week.. she was 'slimmer of the week' !!

Me losing weight.. on a regular basis.. apparently doesnt count :(

That made me laugh.
Who'd have realised what was hidden in Weight-Watchers ?

That's nothing, a telecoms company I used to work for blocked the word S****horpe when receiving emails. So if you lived there, you couldn't email us.

Oh look, happens here too

My exercise is swimming and swimming hard. Hard is relative to your personal ability but you should feel like you have had a good workout.

I swim "lane" 15km to 18km per week (5 days Monday to Friday) with a typical minimum of 3.5km per day (130 * 25m lengths). Time wise the 3.5km takes me between 54 minutes and 60 minutes depending on how knackered I am.

Now for some facts about swimming. It is excellent for the heart and lungs. Is impact and basically stress free for joints. Gets you up and out of the house on a regular basis to ensure you attend your chosen "lane" vs general public pool time.

You are not going to kill yourself (other than drowning) and you are not going to see instantaneous results. You'll burn around 6 calories per length. Also the last flab to leave your body will be around the waist/lower torso regions. Upper torso, legs, arms, neck will benefit the most.

People say that swimming is boring and doing 50, 100+ lengths is unimaginable and a prison sentence. Well it is if you left it be. My mind works quite hard. Keeping length count correct, keeping track of who else is in the lane, when they will catch you so you have to give way, when you will catch them etc. Also you have those joiners and leavers (at either end of the pool) to take account of. If you like it is a game of fitness/exercise with planning, observation and strategy all thrown into the same arena at the same time.

When you get good and comfortable in the appropriate lane for your ability then it becomes a personal challenge (bit like bikers do on peloton events). When to speed up, when to slow down and time your challenge, when to up the rate for a catchup/pass and then settle back down again and work on the next plan.

Just my personal view. Unlike gym equipment you do not have a unit/lane to yourself. You have work it all out.

And the BIG bonus comes when, and it will, you get a lane to yourself for a while (or a couple of you). Bliss - how you use this bliss is up to you. Bang in some sequential hard workout lengths or just relax and slow down for a while not having to worry about being a moving road block :)

I had to do "gym stuff" when recovering from the knee ops. Hated it! I'd much rather go a walk up the Eildons with my brother!

As regards motivation for loosing weight I tend to think of a line Mrs J read out to me from a slimming book she was reading at the time: "Make hunger your friend" Works for me!

Something of a thread revival here Jock,

I did a physio-backed knee class back in the spring, and upshot was I get Gym access.

After Covid and a back injury I have only just got up there for my initiation..
( I ache quite a bit today)

Funny how My weight has been steadily falling for as couple of years

Losing muscle I suspect.. So that might change 🙂

Im a fat bastard its genetic, I blame my parents as they are not here to answer back. I put on fat to balance my weight as muscles disappear. Soon Ill be a blob and you will all laugh at me.... more than now. I was a thin kid and it was hard now Im a fat man and its still hard.

Indeed as since COVID put it's ugly head round the corner I've not been swimming. And when I moved form Southampton to Wrexham in March 2022 the pools (other than those in the roads/lanes) have very poor schedules for swimming for decent fast lane swimming. Either to early %5am with a swim club) or late evening when I already eaten and drunk like fish.

Me MR GRUMPY
