hey all  tommorow me and a few mates are going to go camping... yeh yeh we know it's freezing, hes got a huge tent though so it should be fun, problem is finding somewhere to go, i'm in blaydon (ne214hh) and don't know if any campsites are open this time of year, or even if there is somewhere half decent that isn't a camp site will do, thanks all :D

For future reference i suggest you purchase a cades book, which has all campsites in country in it, that way you will know if a campsite is open

a big tent isn't a good thing in windy/cold weather.

too much space, too damn heavy to carry (unless you are driving), and will probably blow away.

saying that, 8 of us slept in two cars in edinburgh on new years. even in a 3/4 season bag of damn fine quality (mountain equipment £110 bag!) it was still chilly, and that was + alcohol :p

Sorry but complete lack of knowledge shown here.

Modern dome tents even large ones dont weigh the earth. You can get 5 berth domes with living area that weight about 8kgs, the big ones dont weigh much more than 20kgs if that. Most come in proper suitcase style nowadays

And no a tent will not blow away in windy weather. Tents only blow down if they are not guy roped down correctly or human error when putting it up, unless you are extremely unlucky and get a freak storm bordering on tornado/hurricane territory.

They are put through rigourous testing in different strengths from breezes to gale force winds, they wouldnt be on the market if they couldnt stand up to these and british weather.

As for cold in a large space its nothing that a 5 quid camping heater cant sort out

I've had to pull people off mountains before, one couple went up behind lankrigg (a very remote area in west cumbrian mountains, where no body goes because its horrible), I was out night biking with a mate in bordering fowl/ lets get the hell of this mountain type weather, and spotted this couple flailing around a few hundred yards down the moor.

they were out camping in some serious weather, in a single skin kiddies play/pop up tent!! with the best part of £5 bags and cold sandwichs in tin foil.
we led them back to cold fell road and then had to call them an ambulance as the women was completly out of it, she couldn't even get a sentance out.
oh and they didnt have a phone or ANY medical kit. apparenlty they had come from ennerdale and decided to walk into the back end of beyond with no kit, no knowledge nothing.

from your post I gather you are going for a social camp in a field next to a road, but still. you can get the same weather so watch out.

It does things to your blood vessels constricting the flow of warm blood.

Cheers

Alcohol also dehydrates you, leading to internal organs working at a lower inefficiency. Last thing you want when you're freezing out in the open

Here's a suggestion. It's almost the cheapest time of year to travel, so book a flight somewhere warm and camp there instead ;) :p
