Some thing in another post has got me thinking (ouch) Should there be a CBT for cyclists and horse riders like there is for motor bikes, surley this would make them safer, and avoid conflicts.

I voted YES, as a horse rider i think motorists should be more aware of the unpredicatable nature of a horse.

Although as a motorist, if a horse kicked my car i would be well pissed off. [:(!]

Hell no!
There is no way there should be any form of test for push-bikes or horses.
In my opinion the problem lies with the motorists not the riders.

Most of us learn to ride and use a bike from a very early age so i would assume we pick up on how to use them safely on the road. I think encouraging the Cycling Proficiency Scheme in primary schools is a good idea to reinforce this.

As for horse riders, they were on the roads way before the motorised vehicle so they have a greater right to be there. I am not a horse rider myself but i am a cyclist.

As for motorists being the problem, many see bikes and horses as a slow inconvenience that causes them to stop breaking the speed limit from time to time. If you simply pass wide and slow both are not a problem. And if it is not safe to do so then most will move over out of the way is circumstances allow and let you through, provided the driver is prepared to wait the 10secs behind the rider.

I have heard of far too many nasty incidents from around where i live of horses that have "spooked" because of impatient drivers.

Maybe horses should pay road tax as well, due to their unpredictable behaviour and deposits left on thoroughfares.

Yeah but if you say that if it uses a road it should pay tax, then it implies that all cyclists should pay road tax. Basicly saying that when you buy your 7 year old a bike you would have to tax it. Dont be daft.

i think that all kids should be allowed to cycle on the pavement, if they did crash into a walker it wouldnt kill them, but if they were in the road and a car hit them they would be killed or seriously injured

thats horse $hit chris and you know it. modern roads were not designed for horses - just because 'it used to be done like that' is no way a justification to carry on doing it.

in the days when horses mainly used the roads, they used to throw buckets of $hit into the streets because there were no sewers - so the sewage was there before the cars too.. so do i have a right to crap on the road? no, this is silly.

I have one major gripe with horses being on the road, and its not the time it takes to pass them. Its the damage they do to the roads - and the fact they seem to be allowed to crap anywhere. If a dog fouls on the road its £1000 fine, if a horse does it then no-one seems to be bothered. Horses tend to poo rather a lot more.

Have you ever been on motorbike, thats cornering and then hit horse poo? Now thats dangerous.

here endth the rant

Cinq Sporting - and yes, its broom yellow!

I personally think that horses should be banned from the highway:

a) Because there's no need for them to be there, no-one realistically needs to use a horse to get from A to B...

b) A safety point of view for the horse and rider... they go so slowly, a car doing 5 mph would be considered a serious safety hazard, and a horse will do more damage to a driver than another car, and the horse would die in the event of a collision. It's more hassle than it's worth.

Dogs tend to crap on the pavement whereas horses tend to do so out in the countryside on what are already semi-poorly maintained roads.

When i stated above about a taxing yer 7yr olds bike, i meant that maybe he isn't gonna ride it on the road but some older person may. To prevent this all bikes would have to be taxed. Clever people would mod small bikes to make em fit bigger people so as not to pay tax on it.

The reasoning behind why non-road tax payers get a free lane all to themselves (bus lane) is to encourage us all to use more enviromentally friendly forms of transport. It is something i totally agree with. If i wanna be lazy then i`ll have to pay for it.

horses should be bombproof (aka not get spooked by cars) otherwise they shouldnt be on the road. if there is a even slight chance of the horse going out of control or being spooked then it shouldnt be there.

Most horses tend not to get spooked by cars. That is provided the driver doesnt fly by at silly speeds, beep their horn, or sit behind them revving the engine when they cant get passed. This is a common thing for an ignorant driver to do.
