I cycle a lot, not to work or anything but on trips with mates. Yes you see some stupid cyclists but a.not many and b. I think car drivers should take into account their machiene weighs about 1-2 tons and bikes do not.

There are never any cycle paths where you need them - especially as we do long distance road cycling on country lanes etc. One experience we had has changed our view on things forever... there was four of us in a line down a normal two lane road, quite a narrow one too. We were all within a couple of yards of each other and a car came up behind and didn't leave enough room to get passed as a car came the other way, obviously he was in the wrong lane so he just swung in on my mate, who was right in front of me and at the head of the line. My friend literally had no alternative (we were doing easily 20mph, which is a lot on a bike) but to leave the road and piled into a ditch. The car didn't touch him but pulled in so violently if my mate hadn't gone off the road he would have been hurt, I'm certain.

As it was the motorist probably didn't even see what he'd done, fortunately my mate was Ok but the bike was wrecked - £100 worth of damage. Now if there is a road not wide enough for two cars and a bike we ride side by side, which pisses off sensible motorists but they have to wait till there's nothing coming to pass. In general car drivers need to be a lot moer careful it seems to me.

or to get the ultimate in revenge just put in the clutch, push down gearstick and move across to between 5th and reverse, doesnt go into reverse but lights up reversing light :p

Why don't you just leave a bigger space between each bike?

Well there are four of us sometimes more and it's a bit antisocial to leave a car-sized gap between each! Also it annoys motorists too - as then they have to make 4 overtaking moves not 1!

Also, when you're going fast on bikes it makes a big difference to be close together, i.e. the cyclists behind work less hard than the leader. Once you back off a bit there is actually more wind resistance than if you were in front because of the air rejoining after being parted by the lead cyclist. When you cover big distances it makes a big difference believe me!

Tried left foot braking today and I actually found it pretty easy - I don't know if it was because the 'comfort zone' for my left foot just happened to be in that spot where the brake lights were activated but could still accelerate.

Am also loving Ghosts t'riffic idea, off to test it out against the wall to see if it's true.

Well if the car behind runs into me if I stop dead it's their fault for being too close and not seeing the brake lights isn't it?

not if there are no whitnesses and they say you overtook them and pulled in to quick and slammed on your brakes! or they say you reverced into them!

Going from say 50mph to reverse would be interesting, never tried it and don't intend to ;). Why, what happens when you do?

(UNless you meant the reverse light thing, 'cept it won't go into reverse unless I pull up the thingy and I tried it and it doesn't light up unless I do this so NOT even going to think about putting it briefly into reverse with the clutch held down)

Hang on, I always thought that if you - even with yoru foot down on clutch - went towards reverse when moving forward more than about 1mph you damaged your gearbox. I.e. when you are parking or whatever and reverse in, then try to reverse without stopping your car, so put it into reverse, you make a nasty sound. I only ever did this in an old Fiat uno offroad when I learnt to drive when I was younger in a garden, however, surely it is the same?

I can't explain why...with the clutch down it should be completely disengaged, I am only passing on some experience.

Ah that's why then. Interesting. I don't know enough about gearboxes to understand why at the moment. I can't remember ever having given it a go in my dad's more modern car (i.e. pulling out of our drive or something, not at 50mph!). The car in question was a G-reg 4 speed Uno so i can understand why it wouldn't have liked it.

Cheers for correcting me.

Few years ago at Monaco during the F1 race pace lap the safety car, following the cars round the track, literally jumped into the air when going at about 90 into reverse. I think the driver was (ex F1) Victorio Brambilla if memory serves. I read it in a book by the F1 doctor who was in the car and I've since seen it on TV.

One of the many funny quotes from James Allen and Martin Brundle today during the Grand Prix; this one from Allen:

"...You can see the revs there at 16,000rpm, to put that into perspective let me tell you that your Mondeo at home would blow itself apart at about 6,000 rpm..." ;)

It's a mondeo, you can't expect much more ;)

Ready for a small onslaught of people who like the Mondeo.
