OK
I can't use a hand held mobile phone while I'm driving.
I can't watch TV.
But I can look at the Sat Nav screen.
What's the difference?
They all stop me concentrating on the road ahead (and behind)
Should San Navs be banned?
Just a light hearted bit of banter will do.

You can also hold the micrphone of any other two-way radio system - e.g. CB.

But seriously - there is also the point that sat-nav shines a light back at you, ruining night vision. Yes , ban it!

Also smoking?

On my Garmin Streetpilot the brightness is adjustable. I agree it can be way too bright for night driving, that's why I always turn the brightness down to the point where it's no brighter than my speedo illumination when driving at night.

Smoking while driving? Yes I agree it should be regarded in the same way as using a handheld phone, if not even more dangerous. In an emergency someone stupid enough to be using their phone will probably drop it to get both hands back on the wheel, but would a smoker drop a lit cigarette?

.

Nope!! and , as an ex-smoker, I can tell you that when you miss flicking the ash out of the window and the lit end falls in the car, well, it sort of diverts you - TOTALLY!!

As reagrds sat nav, I can't be bothered. Friend bought a cheapie in Tescos. Sitting in a jam on the M1 the satnav was moving down the A1!! As they went round the M25 it was telling them to take the next turning off the North Circular!! I'll stick to my old GPS, at least when I get lost it tells me where I am!

Re: Sat Nav should I by an OS map

as most people know all sat navs now adays give voice instructions which means you never have to take your eyes off the road! and smoking well;) i would ban drinking this would result in a lot less deaths in cars and crimes and fights would probably drop by 80% and the world would be a nicer place to live dont u think.

Re: Sat Nav should I by an OS map

There is a big difference. A sat nav should be placed as close as possible to the right hand side (of a right hand drive car of course) to the console above the steering wheel. The spoken instructions are all you need to know where you are going, if you miss what it says, or you want to take a look at the map on the screen then it's just like glancing down at your speedo - as it's not far to the right of it. It's the way we have to fit them and it works for me, my eyes are more off the road adjusting the headunit ;)

Re: Sat Nav should I by an OS map

You guys may have standards, but most satnavs are fitted by the user. my observation is that they tend to be mounted central at the bottom of the windscreen. Presumably so that the passenger can see as well, but way away from the drivers sight line. AND, what about all the posh cars with SN built into the central console? And is it Merc ort BMW who control the whole lot with one knob - you must need to look at the scren?
