Hi,

As some of you may know i'm selling my car and have put it up for sale on Autotrader. I then got an email from a character called 'dave mark' saying he definatly wants to buy the car but its for his wife and shes away on business in france for two weeks and if I could hold on to the car for two weeks.

I then replied saying yeah I will keep the car for two weeks for £750 deposit. I then got a phone call yesterday (I didnt take it) saying that the deposit would be in the post. I then got an email this morning reading:

Hello,
Thank you very much for your mail.
I have called my wife to find out if she could take
her time off to be around for the test drive but her
work in france is quite demanding and would need time
to complete before she could be back.
Her fear is that she does not want to loose the car.
She will be very disappointed. As for me I am a very
busy man and like I said cannot take decision for her
as regard what she wants.

To save time , after much delibration with my wife,
she has told me to go ahead to buy the car. So we have
decided to call a friend of ours. he is an auto valuer
and broker. but he majors in sales of Limos.
So I have discussed with him if he could help with the
assessment and the test drive on my wife's behalf. I
trust his jugdment, he is a professional in the field.

Payment would reach you in an amount of £10,000.

The reason being that this exact amount is being owed
me by my associate company and there have decided
to pay me in one bankers draft.
Now £7,000 will serve as deposit of the vechicle and
the left funds { £3,000 } after you might have
deducted the deposit for the car would be used to
offset shipping and handlings charges(freight), MOT,
insurance, clearance, tax and other bills that would
be incurred ok.
Once the auto valuer confirm that the vechicle of up
to my specification i would arrange for the balance
immediately.
Please note that full payment would be made before the
actual pick up of the vechilce. Also note that once
the amount cheque clear into your account to are to
remit £3,000 , to the auto valuer , so that there can
come for the inspection .
I am a sincere person and would want you to know this
beforehand so we won't have problems in the near
future.
Kindly let me know asap if this is ok with you so we'd
proceed with this transaction.
Once more, thanks in earnest hoping we'd do business
together.
You can call me on this number +44703 192 6739
Have a fulfilled day and God bless.
Best wishes,

This just seems all to dodgy too me..... what do you guys think?. Should I wait to see if the deposit comes and check bankers draft is genuine or what?.

Poor confused fellow... can't even decide his name.

Basically get as much personal details as possible of everyone involved, address, name, etc. photos copies of driving licence.. if the bankers draft does come through get a copy of that too..

I feel left out - I don't have a 419'er to play with :(

play them, but beware, the laws in their country are different to ours, i/e they won't get into trouble, but you will(n)

what? for getting the bloke to send a photo of himself wearing a thong and native american headress, up to his knees in dung, and holding a rotting fish and sign that says,,,BOOYAAHHHH!!!?????

Ask him to send the full amount via bankers draft. Once it has cleared, then he can collect the car.
As for the limo guy test driving, well, i would be careful there. Sounds a bit iffy to me.

Or, If the guy wants it, then let him pay 2/3 of the asking price, with the understanding that he test drives , and collects by a date given by you. Failing that, he forfeits the monies payed. At least that way you will know if the guy is genuine or not.

One more thing, don't take a bankers draft at face value. They can be fraudulent. Make sure it has cleared into your account first.

I never quite understood how it actually works, but DON'T pay in the cheque/ bankers draught. There's some loophole apparently where it will initially clear into your account, but then the whole lot will disappear out when it appears that the funds are fraudulent or something. Basically the £10k they pay in has the large amount deducted to leave you the amount that you're owed for the car. But then next thing you know the £10K becomes a debt to YOUR account with you owing it to the bank.

Can't believe there are all these Nigerian scams still doing the rounds.

I'd get back to the scammer and ask him to send a deposit over by post in used £20 notes. If he's genuine, he'll oblige.

Also ask him for a phone number and UK address just out of curiosity. Otherwise don't even bother to have anything to do with him...

Phone number gives it away more so if your still in doubt, pretty sure you could get a GP in France anyway, sounds utter tripe, send him a mail saying sweary words.

the way it 'works' is they always overpay you so you have to give them some cash back. they keep that cash, then when the bankers draught fails to clear fully, you have nothing from them and they have money from you, they dont get the car by the time this happens, buy thats not what they're after, they just want the cash that they 'overpaid' you. that is why they always try to give more than you're asking for.
