The cost-saving ideas are good. Don't touch any signs, just tell everyone they mean kph instead of mph. However there are some serious issues with a 40mph motorway limit.

First, at almost half the speed of original travel, there will, at busier times, be yet more congestion, as almost twice the cars are occupying the road. Second, dawdling along at 40mph, people are gonna get so bored, fall asleep, play with toys and likely have a crash due to their attention being diverted.

Then there's other factors regarding pollution etc as at 40mph some motorway mile munchers will be labouring in top gear, using more fuel in the process. Selecting a lower gear means less economy and more pollution. Also at the new speed engines will be running almost twice as long anyway, which sure as hell won't be healthy.

I love the way MPs can come up with such bold ideas without, it seems, running them past any real people. *Shrugs* It can't be long before these ridiculous ideas are binned or completely ridiculed. The sooner the better I think.

No offence but he's welsh. What do you expect???? Totally stupid idea and doubt it will be implemented. Imagine how long it would take to get places. The transport industry would suffer, the royal mail would suffer everyone. Not a chance.

Oi less of the Welsh, you raised the same points i was thinking.

well as has been said already, the slower cars travel the more congestion is created, and its directly proportional (inverse square law).

basically you travel half the speed, and you will get ~ 4times the congestion on the roads.

are these MP's thick? after all its the *highest* job you can get without any real qualifications.

You know something, out of the 16 countries I drove thru and 13,000miles covered, the ONLY country I had difficulty with traffic on ANY main road (outside a city centre) was the m25/m3/m4/m20 bit, took us 7hours to travel about 150miles:eek:

I did a better milage than that on roads in kazahkstan, and they were shocking:eek:

also we reseve the right to be british, by keeping our miles, and our lb's and pennies.
screw the kph's

their reasoning is to cut pollution etc? in that case id just drive on the motorway in 2nd gear at high revs to kick as much crap out as poss.

i mean, come on, looking at my car, do i really give a toss about the enviroment and the ammount of crap my car kicks out? lol

Dunc

I think we as a nation are taking this whole enviroment thing far too seriously.

yes making cuts here and there will effect things and the future may look rosier.

but they are making TOO many cuts and that on car users. when infact its industry (I mean FFS they aren't gonna build any new nuke power stations now in teh UK because of protests, instead they are building two gas power stations and some smelly incintertors:bang: ).
and chain stores like tesco's and asda NOT recylding their waste as well as they should. most recycle their cardboard, but not all that plastic and glass etc, which is where the REAL Differences can be made.

also bring back reusable milk bottles!!! WTF they make a glass milkbottle, use it once, then smash it up, remake it and use it like that. stupid or what, why not just clean them properly:rolleyes:

Also AMERICA and RUSSIA and CHINA!!!
sort them out and I think this planet will last a damn site longer, lets face it our country is tiny, if we ALL Stopped driving tommorrow, all industry closed down, and we all stopped farting, the planet is still gonna head toward doom at pretty much the same rate (we're talking less than 1% global influence here for the entire country).

just get out there and have a plastic bonfire while you still can.

Thats rediculous and there is no chance it will come into force. Personally I want autobahns  :slayer:

There are some motorists who voluntarily use that speed limit as is. Theyre the very bloody dangerous ones, that usually call for me to try and to impromptu brake tests

I agree with Sam's point entirely....

I think it would be MUCH better to introduce a MINIMUM speed limit on motorways and proper sections of duel carreigway (like A1M).

as on the A1 M there are SOOO many accidents with tractor's and people pulling onto it, crawling along a few miles at about 42mph (you know the ones, the ONE SPEED EVERYWHERE MERCHANTS, who do 42 on teh motorway and 42 in a school 20mph zone(n) ) then do a dodgy manover from the inside lane across the outer lane and intothe central reservation so they can go the other direction adn cause more mayhem.

yeh defo a min limit, it would get rid of crp cars using the motorway, pulling out from behind a truck and getting multi car pile ups behind them.

say set it at 50mph? that way even 32t artics are OK with it.
that way, heavy loads and extra wide loads HAVE to have a police/dvla (black and yellow) escort the whole duration. much better use of gov's time implementing that

I dont see how anyone couldnt be offended by that  And from the looks of things they have!

Oh right. Sorry for the confusion people. Posted in a hurry because i was so outraged by the thought of 40mph speed limits. I just meant (in the same we scottish are branded) that the welsh are tight with their money aswell. So no wonder it was a welsh person trying to suggest ideas to save money.

Thats why i said "what do you expect"? (tongue firmly placed against cheek)

Just because i didnt put  or :p doesnt mean i dont like the welsh.

Anyway, people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones sammiboo ;) (y)
