hi guys and gals...im thinking of buying a speed camera detector. Probably a road angel because of the good reviews etc. just a few questions...

firstly it says on the website of road angel that these types of system are staying legal. is that true?? or is it them trying to sell more units? lol

secondly is the road angel a simple plug and play? im thinking of getting the 'new road angel' model. would i just buy that and then im off? or do i need all these other accesories?

thirdly...is road angel the best one to get? has anyone got any xperience with other speed camera detectors? cheers in advance jskn

I will be reviewing the road angel navigator 600 sat nav & speed detector, in the future after more conclusive tests.. The Road angel brand/name is good as a fixed camera detector but so is the snooper. it depends on what it is you want just a detector or the benefit of a basic sat nav for the near same money. There is the new snooper just come out, its small and looks pretty. It is probably better than the road angel camera detector. It would be worth it to think what you are after... I will say at this time the ra 6000 is quite a nice little unit at after a more in depth look at the unit and its functions you maybe a little let down. Its only after time though when you learn to operate it. It shows its appeal

Most peeps i know prefer the snooper to the road angel. Check them both out and decide for yourself (y)

well i would like one which can obv detect the fixed cameras but also mobile ones so i can slow down. also will the road angel ra 6000 detect digital cameras aswell? If it had sat nav aswell than that would be a major bonus. are there any which can provide both facilities? snooper sapphire??

sorry im jst new to all of this speed camera detector stuff! im only allowed 6 points  cos im a 'new driver'

the only legal systems will be database based alert systems (sat nav add-ons). anything that can actually detect will be illegal in the near future. manufacturers are allowed to say it won't become illegal because so far there is no definate date given by the goverment, but it is generally accepted that its only a matter or time. once they become illegal to use they wont be illegal to buy (much like bongs), so expect prices to drop a lot once the new laws are finally put in place.

Like he says id avoid anything with laser or radar detection as they will be made ilegal shortly. I believe ours is the only completely GPS based detector on the market that covers both fixed and mobile camera sites

i heard that they dont work and it is just a myth! and if a copper catches u with it wont i get a big fine or something? just wondering aswell.....maybe stupid but do mobile cameras work at night? do they usually come out at night? cheers

Those Jammers do work but they are bate.

Drive past a radar gun and it'll read error or some random crazy number.

Police will stop and inspect.

Best thing to do is drive without no number plates, I did with no rear for almost a week and no one noticed... well no one important noticed anyway :p

Hello there mate. I sell quite a few Sat Nav's etc in work and what I advise people is if they want a Sat Nav and a Radar Detector, avoid the Road Angel Navigator, it's not that good, poor sattelite reception, and it only picks up fixed cameras to which you have to pay a yearly subscription of something like £60

Spend your money on a Sat Nav, such as the Garmin C510D or TomTom 510 and go onto www.pocketgpsworld.com and download their speed camera updates for the unit. You get fixed, mobile, laser everything on there, and because it's not a detector (they're stored as points of intrest) it won't be made illegal :)

I use the site myself and to be honest it's better than road angel etc because it knows in advance where the mobiles could be, when the road angel picks them up it may be too late and you won't have time to slow down. You just have to put up with a few false alerts on the mobile ones.

Quite a few customers are glad I gave them this information as it's not worth spending £300 on the road angel when you can have GPS and the speed camera warnings for £250! :) Hope this helps!

cheers ozzie that is v helpful. im a bit of a retard when it comes to this so sorry if i sound stupid. So say i got a tomtom and download the speedcamera updates will they alert me or does it just hav a speed camera icon or something? secondly how do i update it? just but the memory card in or something? cheers jskn

Yeh it'll flash up and play a sound and everything... The garmins are much easier to set up, Garmin give you a little program to put on them... go onto the site www.pocketgpsworld.com and go into it it's £20 a year but it's worth it... they only just brough that in too it was free before - check out the site it tells you how it works and how to get it working on your TomTom/Garmin.

You install and update it by plugging the unit in to your computer and updating it that way, it puts the data on the hard drive of the TomTom, or internal storage of the Garmin.

i have a PDA with tomtom navigator 5 installed. i've loaded several speed camera databases from pocketgps.com, and so far they've warned me every time on every road for every type of speed detection device, including the average speed areas, gatsos, temporary hand held radar guns, etc etc. it even tells me the type of speed detector ahead and what the speed limit is for it. i travel around the country on business so i need something reliable. the database accuracy depends on people registering new locations as they find them, if you see a camera or traffic cop with a gun etc. somewhere that isnt already on the database you save the new location as a POI and then upload it to pocketgps, or alternatively give them the gps coordinates. they only upload a new location when several people notify of the same one, to prevent false alerts and maintain accuracy. it works perfectly, its very cheap (£1 for a months subscription), and i think its the future. pocketgps also provide databases formatted for all types of sat nav software. the only downside is I keep slowing down for temporary speed cameras when they arent there, but better safe than sorry.

That's the same system I use but I use a different free speed camera program and database - purely because it's free. On pocketgps though, if you find a speed camera, gun, etc that isn't on their database, you get a lifes free subscription to the site :) since they started charging I think they have to update the list as well as just relying on people entering it, otherwise they can't really charge for it!
