I've got a bit of extra pay this month I was owed from work so have decided to invest in a laptop at long last. I have about £5-600 to spend and as usual would like something all-singing, all-dancing, best I can get for the money kind of thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ta :D

Do you want Intel or AMD? Is GFX power important? Does size matter? Big screen important? Wifi technology?

I still like the Acers - you can pick up this for £565 - although the compromise for the bigger screen is that they have only put a Celeron-M in.

I've got one of these...very happy with it...widescreen

Rather irritatingly, I haven't paid for it yet and it's £60 less now than when I bought it...

Toshiba are reckoned to be among the best, and if you want to go up to £600 you should be able to get better spec (smaller screen)

I've heard the Acer build quality is a bit poor and I have to say that when I looked at them they felt rather cheap and flimsy, but then some people are very happy with them...

One thing that puts me off laptops is the screen size - a 14" would drive me crazy, and a 15" is not that much better. BUT it all depends on what you are used to.

Mine is a 15.4 WS and it's plenty big enough for surfing, MS office stuff...remember, you sit much close to a laptop screen than with a PC ... oh and I'm used to a 15" PC screen at home and work

my 14" screen was fine, till i got 19" desktop screen and found out what i was missing :D so get 17 inch

IME 17" laptops are pretty heavy so if you're ever going to carry it around, I'd go 15/15.4 ;)

If you're not in a mad rush to buy then have a look at a few of our laptops when you're over next. Plenty to try. All shapes and sizes. Few different brands, some high gfx some not. Don't know if we have a mobile AMD amongst us but they're hard to come across anyway.

My point exactly - I run a 20.1" next to a 15" here, on a dual display - and a 17" at work - therefore for me, a 15.4" screen would be a massive downgrade, and the available resolution would drive me crazy :spin:

Saying that, I still have a Packard Bell laptop here - think it is a 15" - but got it half-price last year, for £290 from PC World during a net promotion - I let the kids use it.

Well in response to those I prefer AMD but haven't kept up with the chip wars so if Intel can now offer the same kind of processing power per size then that would be an option as I know AMD are battery-hungry. Now graphics, hmmmm, I don't know, I was debating this one. Not hugely important as the desktop will still be the main machine, but I think a separate graphics card would be better, jus in case. Screen size isn't so important, I still have good eyesight so if I can get better other bits by compromising on a smaller screen, I'd do that :) And wi-fi, yes, but every one I've looked at in my price range has it so no biggie.

Thanks Vickster for your advice about build quality :) Things like that are hard to tell until you've done something to it!

Having had a look about, I was quite fancying
this Acer and this Asus. I have looked at some of the better known brands but can't help but feel that you're paying a lot of money for the name and the potentially better quality isn't really worth it for the features that you lose.

Something tells me you'll be kind of busy ;) I don't have a huge amount of time off work to myself so it needs to be sometime this week, especially in terms of delivery. I'll pop into town (or rather trek about the retail parks) later to have a look about and a play :D

Exactly..

That Acer is great spec for the money. Prefer the style of it compared to the Asus.
