Got out of car tonight in the petrol station, as I shut the door there was a massive spark of static electricity (followed by a few choice words!).

Thank feck it didn't happen when I had the pump in with fumes billowing out!

mk1 mondeos suffered from this,was a recall to prevent this using a additional earth strap

If you saw Mythbusters with the 'panty-static' maker, you'll know just why you don't want to do that I guess I'm lucky, I must hit my earth thingy all the time, never get static from the car.

i always thought this happened more often with cheap(er) tyres? And people who had cheap tyres then had them earth strap things trailing along the floor from the backs of their cars?

Holding onto the metal frame of the door or pillar as you get out. Therefore discharging yourself without a gap for the spark to cross. You won't feel a thing!

hold onto the metal part of your key and earth yourself against something inside the car via the key. Then the spark goes between the metal and the car - and there is no arcing to your skin.

Sei used to give me the occasional zap. Punto was pretty bad but fabia has been good for me.

You just need to earth yourself as you get out of the car. Touching the metalwork as you exit as suggested should do the trick.
