well one of the aussies on the suzuki forum had this to say after reading this thread

Something you can post there for us - Tesla was the one who 'invented' AC power, Edison was DC (ed argued that it was safer than AC, despite the fact that the good ol' electric chair was DC-powered). Also, there is no "tesla coil" in a tv - sounds like he's refering to the EHT transformer (curse my being an Electronics Technician by trade...)

Ou God they are checking my knowledge out?!

If i am wrong I have to accept that but I always understood Tesla as did DC! I will have to go and have a look now as I feel a little bit stupid.

Have to go and check out about a TV, when I first brought up tesla in a physics lesson the physics teacher said that there was a tesla coil in a TV set.

Now I feel like a dumb person!

Ok, now my argue back:

Yes, there are tesla coils in TV which act as the EHT:

"Every large television set has a Tesla coil resonance transformer called a flyback transformer which provides the high voltage necessary to operate the picture tube."

And if the technician wants to read up:
http://www.resonanceresearch.com/nikola-tesla-coils-picture-colorado-1899-labratory.htm

Secondly, I can't believe I got the AC/DC question wrong but the man is right, Tesla is AC and Edison is DC. However, my reasoning is CORRECT - as per my Physics in context book and nothing to do with safety. Also see that above page to confirm.

SO, I have redeemed myself and only made a little mistake. Phew.

I still found it funny! No, no life, a sixth former who has either maths work, chemistry cwk or physics questions to bore myself with.

Blame the aussie suziki owner not me!

Tesla coils: A device for making f***ing huge high-voltage sparks...

We should develop a FIAT-mounted Tesla gadget for blasting Novas and 3-series BMWs out of our way :D

was changing the spark plugs on a yaris yesterday, do they have a seperate coil for each cylinder or something? is this common in cars, think the 1.8 fiat has this? why?

Met Cognac 99 Brava 100 HSX, wish it'd clean itself!

Donz, please get your friend on the suziki forum to read my reply if you could? I am interested to what his reply his?

Cheers
Paul

Mad,

I have separate coils on my Marea attached directly onto the spark plugs. No distributor, no HT leads to worry about :D

but

they cost £75 each and there's 5 of them:(

Problem with ES type fittings is that they can vibrate loose, which is why you rarely see them in automotive applications. ES fittings are just as likely to seize as BC.

You are all doing it wrong, anyone who disagrees will have their posts deleted and receive a 7 day ban.

I wonder if the suzuki "electrical technician" realised his mistake?

A little late i guess ;)

Well I want to know, I provided him with a link to see he was wrong and a quote! I did make the stupid mistake of labelling the wrong AC/DC inventor but my reasons for the AC VS. DC argument were correct so were those about a tesla being in a TV. I wanted a reply at the time, a school kid knowing better than an electrical technician? Hmm...

Sure but you should put it in context in that the stupid mistake wasn't really stupid in that 75% of people wouldn't know what I was talking about nevermind who Tesla is :p

I thought it was spelt Nikola Tesla :p

Yes Pete, but that's before my time!

Lol Stu, I knew your accountancy skills were somewhat lacking ;)
