it'll help by not having crank case gas dumped into the induction system, and it is also a requirement competition use i think, the tank should be big enough to hold all the oil in the engine.
 
You put it in line from where your crank case breather (sump breather if you have one always good on hi performance turbo cars) before the inlet system and it does what it says and collects oil so that in doesn't enter the inlet system. As you may or may not know its an MOT requirement that the vented oil fumes do go back into the inlet system and not to atmosphere.

Also if you want to do track days its a requirment as well to feed it back into inlet system so as to not drop oil on the track from breather pipe venting to atmosphere.

re sump breathers, is it as simple to add in as it sounds? For my turbo engine, i'm going to buy a second sump to modify for the oil return, if its easy to add a breather i will do that as well.

Depands if you can use a welder on the sump its thin metal, you need to put the breather above oil level and in a position you can route a pipe from it up to meet the other breather, see pics of Emma's turbo car. I've seen it work it breathes well.

I was thinking for the sump, just drill it, and the put a threaded tube through that, a nut on the inside (prolly weld that to the thread), then an o ring on either side then tighten it on. A connector like that must exist somewhere.

am i corrent in reading that theres 2 sorts of catch tanks? one where u have to empty the tank urself? and one where it has a pipe from the bottom and emptys the tank back into the engine straight away?

saw a alloy catch tank set up on a light blue mk2 UT with white comp mo's. wish id got pics of the setup now!

I have one on both of my volvos, made out of,,,, wait for it,,,, a nescafe metal tin.

classy! there is no way im doin that lol! after all the time and effort i spent getting it mint, i aint putting an old tin in there! lol

for almost all modern cars the engine breathes back into its induction system to improve emissions, so its recirculating oxygenless oil-laden air back into the fuel mix. not good for performance because as we all know oxygen is important to get a good burn. in theory fitting a catch tank will gain horsepower, as well as prevent carbon & sludge build up in the induction system.

in the past i've tried to remove the breather system resulting in a very oily engine bay, and an MOT failure. i've tried to block it up but thats not a good idea in the long run because crankcase ventilation is a good thing. a catch tank is the easiest and best solution, apart from the MOT failure risk, although its easy to go back to standard for an MOT. dont spend money on one, they are easily made. personally i think they're a waste of time, but it can look nice in the engine bay if you make a good one. you may find cold starting a bit rougher in the winter taking longer for idle to settle

Then i might as well let oil cack up my air intake because I dont want something else to empty and I don't want to modify my sump! Although when I start tuning mods, it might be worth having.
