charging car battery...

shouldnt u know this???

u can leave them on to charge ( or so i just been told)

o0o0 a yes and a no.... so do u take em off? should i beat the person who told me u can leave them on?

When you charge a battery the acid inside tends to bubble up, and the gas would have nowhere to leave from - if there was a spark somewhere it would ignite the gassy vapour at the top of the cell.... Can - worms - everywhere.

If the tops where off the gas would escape and the chances of explosion reduced. (y)

Some batteries (iirc maintainence free ones) have a run off tube because they dont have to be topped up, but can still be charged.

As long as you have a good charger don't take them off. The output from the alternator is way above the capacity of a charger. The sensing circuit in the charger will stop any overcharging. Batteries only produce flammable gas if they are over charged.
On yachts you often have a smart charger for shore power and the batteries are sometimes in the cabin.

I thought pretty much all car betteries sold in the last 10 years were te sealed, maintenance-free type.
Perhaps Beau got this one cheap off eBay? :p

I was always taught to remove the cap and top up the water to voer the plates if needed whilst also checking if the plates were warped.

Beau, you seem very lazy, google would have got you a much quicker answer.

You have to be careful with maintenance free batteries because if you try to remove the cap (especially the long all in one version) you can break them and then it would mean a new battery.

A boat yard did it to the battery in my boat and I was not pleased as you don't want battery acid spilling around in a cabin.
