honestly there is no need to be scared, ur more at risk statisticaly speaking in a car.

How far are you travelling? wen u booked ur ticket did u ask the travel person to inform the airlines ur a bit scared and they can look after you then after all it's part of the service(y)

one thing i wouldnt recommend is having a dutch courage drinky cos if u get drunk they won't let u on the flight!!!!

My mum was **** scared of flying, then she went on a fear of flying course at Manchester airport. Must have worked because she's flying all over the place now.

Ive only ever been in a small Cessna plane when I was about 6, so never been on an airliner. Ive just booked a holiday to Palma Nova in May so i'll find out then how it is for me!

I am not a fan of it, I know far too much about the process to be able to enjoy it!

ooh is that part of ur course?

my cousin flys planes he loves it big time, well i am on long haul in couple of weeks, so wen I get there i'l post how it was perhaps, but if it's horrible i will remain quiet!!!

First plane I ever went in was my uncle's old Fairchild Forwarder (4-seat WW2 reconaissance plane) when I was about 15, I was scared at first but once we were in the air I loved it! (y) I've only been on a passenger jet once when I went to Prague in 2004, and to be honest other than takeoff it was really boring

My grandfather was a chief engineer for the RAF so kind of grew up with the mechanics of aviation, my course doesn't specifically cover flight but it covers fluid dynamics which is all flight is.

If your car breaks you end up stranded, if the plane breaks you end up dead. I worry when I drive my dad's new megane that something will break, I can be a nervous wreck on planes. If anybody sits next to me on a place, I am the guy with clenched fists, deep breathing and eyes closed during landing and after leaving the ground until cruising.

Paul it might be a super dooper mahoosive airliner but it can gluide (y) and fly on just the 1 engine, its all thanks to computers aswell :worship:

Make some friends in the RAF - a couple of barrelrolls, tight formation flying and a quick game of 'follow the leader' will sort you right out :D

You ever seen a 737 glide? They don't do it very well...once it hits stall speed it's going down like a rock. You're relying your life on everything working 101%.

look on ebay ;)

you do know planes run 3! computer systems master, backup and backup2 the odds of all computers failing is stupidly small!

and yes IF the pilot decided to ignore the computer warnings about a stall it might fall from the sky, but whats there to worry about? you'll smash into the floor so fast its not going to hurt, you wont feel a thing

the first plane i went on after 911 scared me, we hit a very bad patch of turbulance, but no i love flying atleast if the plane crashes you'll either die or be fine.... i imagen:rolleyes:

lol i was on plane to portugal like a week after that or something, was urm fun at the airports to say the least, armed security both ends iirc

Charmed103 is right Beau. You are far more at risk in a car, on a pushbike/ motorbike, in a coach, train or even as a pedestrian than in a plane. In fact I'm sure I read somewhere that flying is the safest form of travel!

As for the flying itself, after you've done it a few times it is rather boring. For me, the worst bit is all the hassle getting to the airport, checking in, waiting in the departure gate etc. The flight itself is fairly routine.

If you're flying long haul you've got the hassle of random bag searches, and the hassle at the other end is almost as bad! Going to the USA is a real pain because most times immigration control are overloaded and you have to queue for ages. And US passport control agents have to be the most unfriendly people I've ever met (maybe with the exception of the Lithuanian Border Police that made me feel like I was in a WW2 concentration camp:eek: ).

The USA immigration agents are a total contrast to the rest of the American people who are normally very friendly, and to be fair they are trained to be that way but there have been so many complaints that they are currently 'reviewing' their policies...

If you're flying short haul, I really wouldn't worry about it. It's all over in a few hours, and if you choose a window seat you can have an excellent view of where you're going to. Unless the weather is rubbish in which case you get to stare at fog most of the way!

Where are you flying to?

All well and good but all it takes is for a micro crack on the ultra hot turbine blades to extend or a stuck actuator or a faulty sensor or human error or or or....Nightmare for me would be turbulence causing such a massive dynamic load on the wings that they become unserviceable.

I am not talking about control failure specifically. Complete electrical failure on modern planes can be dealt with.

And no, if a 737 is gliding it will lose altitude or height until it stalls/crashes into the ground, there's no beating it...

Then you introduce terrorism to the equation.

Statistically you are of course safer but that doesn't help you as you crash into the deck. I don't feel that dying quickly makes death ok, I have quite a few things to do before going.

It's about control for me I guess, I have never ridden a horse and never intend to, I like to be the one in control, I hate buses/coaches/trains too.

Don't knock it til you tried it Paul :) A good rider is in control of the situation at all times, even when the horse is bolting.
