they forgot opel's entry.

The astra 4S, got a mag with one in, they only made 4, two had new engines, and two had manta 400r engines. Only one competed er once, but it won its rally!! then group B was banned (well by the time opel stopped arguing with irmscher or whoever built em, I think it was SRe that made them).

I saw one of the works 037's and a works S4 at the Lancia Motor Club agm, they were giving folk passenger rides in them, but you had to be there early to book a ride, I of course turned up at lunch time, doh :bang:

Forgot to add the Astra 4S that was refered to was driven by Russel Brooks in only one event the Audi national rally in Wlaes in 1986 which it didn't win, it was in effect a MK2 Astra GTE with 2.4L manta engine supercharged to achieve 343bhp and 259lb.ft of torque, couple of pages of info on it on this site http://kadett-forum.de/thread.php?postid=72863

Thanks for posting that, Aaron.
It made me reminisce to my childhood when I used to dream about cars like the Audi and the Lancia - the days when cars were made out of straight lines.
Guess that's why the Stilo appeals to me.

my dad used to have an audi quatro, the road going version of that group b rally car.
man that was one wicked motor.. 5 cilinder turbo charged, 4 wheel drive. digital dash.
Was the first car I got over 125 Mp/h limit..:D

that model is commonly known as the urQuattro, there was 25 of them at Rallyday last year at Castle Combe which so happens to be on my birthday this year http://www.rallyday.com/index.html

The one Dutchie is talking about is the proper version, even more meatier that the 20V version! Nice pic.

Liam

As I said, there was 25 of them at Rally Day last year as it was the 25th anniversary of the quattro being introduced, its the most of the proper short wheel base quattros they have had together in one place, and there were another 50 10V & 20V quattros there as well. They did a big parade round Combe which was great to see.

For me it has to be;

Lancia Delta S4

The ultimate expression of the Group B regulations, the Delta S4 was also the machine that killed the class. Bearing little resemblance to the Delta hatchback that lent it its name, the S4 was a four-wheel drive spaceframe design with a mid-mounted 1.8 litre four cylinder engine. This modest powerplant was fitted with both a supercharger and a turbocharger to produce well in excess of 550bhp. The supercharger boosted power at low RPM, reducing lag until the turbo was up to speed at higher engine revs. The car was instantly successful on its first outing, giving Lancia a 1-2 in the 1985 RAC Rally with Henri Toivonen and Markku Alen respectively. This briefly gave Alen the driver’s championship until he was stripped of his points from the San Remo rally, handing victory to Kankkunen and Peugeot. The S4 was capable of hitting 60 from rest in just 2.3 seconds on a gravel road and in the hands of Toivonen lapped the Estoril Formula One circuit so quickly he would have qualified sixth on the grid for the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix.

The sound of these things in full flight is amazing, the supercharger whine, and the turbo dumping all at the same time is just like nothing on earth, awsome.

Not that it really matters, but I thought it was when that RS200 wiped out a large group of spectators that got them banned?

Whatever, anyone reading this thread who hasn't really seen much of Group B cars in action, I highly recommend you treat yourself to a vid/DVD (try Duke Video, they've got a few), get a beer open and relish. You'll spend most of the time laughing in amazement, I know I do!

Yeah... theres one scene in that video with an Audi Quattro taking a left hander where the driver changes gear at least 3 maybe 4 times...That made me snigger :)

nice one, someone else that read a quality car mag whilst they were still in business (Cars and Car Conversions). I thought it did win a rally? Maybe it was a private contender's imitation?

Anyway, still I think a cool car.

And I love the 037's, I will try and find the kick ass vid, with the S4, it absolutly howls.

If all you young folk love these Group B cars, make a date for Goodwood Festival of Speed, early July this year.

Last year I marshalled at the rally section, Oh, normal sort of things, Hannu Mikkola in the Quattro, Sandro Munari in the Startos, Lancia 037 and more.

I was reading today that they've increased the size of the course for this year. I hope to be back, even if it is 500 miles away.

Cheers

D
