4 weeks ago 2 girls got hit by a train at 80 mph. they were obliviated. i know the parents of one of them and met charlie once.

talking about saftey they need to review the saftey of the small village trainsations as the girls got confused and walked out unaware in to a train

its a sad storey as charlies funeral was today.

whilst i agree that it was a tragic thing to have happened, i don't see how it calls for anything to be changed with regards to level crossings.

It is believed the pair were crossing the tracks to get to Elsenham station despite red warning lights when they were hit by a through-train.

What more than barriers with big flashy red warning lights can be done ?

End of the day, it's still a horrible thing to have happened though - and their family and friends are going through stuff that no-one should. :( may they rest in peace.

But you need the locks to be unlocked incase you get stuck etc. in the middle, flashing lights and loud klaxon should have been enough.

Horrible horrible tradedgy, awful but nothing can be done better I don't think (well a bridge or underpass but that would cost a disproportionate amount of money from what I read).

also not all crossings have lights, barriers etc. some small village crossings are just crossings with no safety features at all.

but theres really not a great deal that will/can be done. all that would happen if this was broughtup is these small crosings would be closed.
think this would be more of an information/education issue

Again agree with arc but although i have not read this article i have to ask, despite the lights and crossing why the young girls still crossed the track????

Should we point the finger at a lack of education

agree with what everone else is saying..

how could you not notice a train coming towards you? specialy when lights are flashing etc. its the kind of thing you look for, like crossing a road, you check to see if anything is coming first.
ah that would be why no one ever gets run over then.
ther moving train could not be seen as the girls train was already in the station hidding the view, lots of people have risked crossing when the lights are on before, if they gats was locked like the gates for cars then they could not risk it even if they thought it was safe

i think its just there own fault they got killed, its just like crossing the road when the traffic lights are green  - they cant really do anything with the gates? the lights were red, - they cross when they were not ment to. will they be fitting locked gates at traffic lights soon?

Some places don't, most don't overseas....

Somebody walking at 3mph can be a lot more aware than somebody doing 40mph in a car.

i dont know what these gates look like but wouldnt most teenagers just climb over it? - being even more dangerous in case they fall onto track?
nar, there a barrier on a track here that goes over the road an pavement, no one jumps over it.
also at the gates are quite far from the track so if you fall you no get killed.

But there are hundreds if not thousands of simple gates throughout the country, whenever I have been walking and had to cross over them, even without a siren and light I have been very cautious and careful.

I think a locking gate could be too dangerous unless it can be easily over ridden (like a solenoid but a gate latch on the inside side), oh wait, i made one of those 4 years ago....;)

It is sad that the girl's deaths is only important due to how it happened :(

Dave, I have only seen the gate in question once, i assume there must be a reason why since such a lock would only cost a small amount.

well for a start one of the parents told me that they might of thought that the lights were to signal there train was leaving. and yes i been to that train station and the only way the would of been able to tell was by listning for track ratteling or placing foot on track to feel for vibrations.

oh and they wouldnt of felt a thing as there brain would of been torn apart instantly
