We blame brexit for everything at the moment, and in some cases rightly so, this one snuck in the back door yesterday while we were all queuing for fuel, the old style European number plate blue stripe down the side with the Eu circle of stars and “GB” under it is no longer legal in Europe and with planing a trip abroad soon it mean I have to either cover that up on my number plate and then have a sticker or change the plates to the new “compliant” version. What does the new version look like, well as we are no longer in Europe is sort of stands to reason we don’t have the European flag so that’s been replaced with the union (Jack) flag, but what annoys me and makes no sense is that after hundreds of years of being Great Britain we have changed that also to UK.

Why?

Well our government not Europe decided to change this and told Europe that they wanted UK instead of GB so as to not offend the northern Irish, except the only part of the uk that these number plate changes don’t apply to is Northern Ireland !!

Anyway I’m not covering my car is stupid stickers so new number plates it is, that’s £26 I’ll never get back.

To be fair as far as the sunlit uplands of Brexit go...it's about a 1 out of 10 for inconvenience given parts of the country have been reduced to fighting each other for fuel and half the gas companies have gone bust and there's food shortages.

This is your fault BTW.. didn't believe enough I can tell.

Nothing surprises me anymore.
I heard the other day (and I hope I mis-heard it) that there is a move to go back to imperial measurements. Is it April 1st?! Surely not? This is not what Brexit was about whether you voted for it or not.
We have crises all around us which are in many cases are due to lack of any planning beyond the 4 year electoral cycle, or not even that far, and EU number plates are a priority?!
Deeply depressing.

Well a little sympathy / reality is required when addressing units of measure.

As an engineer (retired) I spent my working like using SI Units (read kg etc.)

Having lived in Belgium I was used to km, litres per 100km, etc.

However here in the UK we all use miles, MPG, Gallons, Pints, feet, lbs, etc. and I'm perfectly happy with these and log all my car's mileage in miles and fuel usage in gallon except when touring in Europe when I log in Ltrs and Km but convert to miles and gallons.

Are you/UK people 100% ready to switch to full metric, have all your speedos changed, etc. etc.

I'm personally happy with either UK or EU for ALL measurements but are the rest of the UK people?

I don't think this has anything to do with Brexit as such. Won't say more as this can lead into avenues we do not want to go on this Fiat Forum. Won't even go down the National Identity route. There are I gather even in the UK some regions/cultures that will only talk in Welsh as their prime language BUT WILL speaking english. Can you speak Welsh.

We have to be very careful when discussing and potentially challenging nation boundaries.

So the 'green band' isnt universal across Europe...

I wanted one with the local regions flag.. but having BG on it would confuse a few..
The green strip is for electric cars only. When I bought the new plates they showed me a version with the green so it would suggest you can have the green stripe version if you have an electric car.

Absolutely there are clearly people manipulating brexit to meet their own views. There is no need to get rid of the European flag, we’ve had it on number plates for years and it makes no difference l, there are countries outside of the eu who still use the EU banner/stripe for driving in EU countries.

All the oil tycoons bring their super cars over to london for the summer and their number plates can’t even be read in the UK they are written in Arabic !!

This is what my new plates look like to be fair without the big blue block they do look a bit cleaner, though it almost feels like it’s been done to deliberately **** off Europeans, just hope no one takes offence and takes it out on my car

The average European person doesn't give a flying fig about Brexit. Most of them think it was all done and dusted in 2016. Brexit was deliberately messed up so we've ended up with a hodge podge mess. Rejoiners will love me but UK has nothing to gain from being rolled into Europe as yet another colony. There is just no comfortable fit and despite nearly 50 years of membership, there never has been.
