Changing/charging batteries on stop/start vehicles

Changing/charging batteries on stop/start vehicles

I bought one from them for the Panda last year. It came packaged as described, and despite some evidence of knocks outside the box, everything inside was perfect.
I think the couriers do know what they are carrying, so should take more care than with most stuff.
Price was the best I could find as well. Got a slightly better battery for my budget.

If I study the Brochure..
Apparently my twinairs should have such a feature..

They start..with no errors .. so the 2012 batteries can stay a little longer (y)
My Punto TA had its original 2013 battery and turned over plenty fine but no S/S, my entire commute was in S/S traffic so kinda wanted it to work just for the hell of it. Upgraded the EFB battery with an AGM (think it was £120) which finally got it working, would S/S every time on my commute so I felt I had accomplished something :D
I appreciate for a lot of people its not worth it though

I emailed Tanya batteries after I'd read your post Dave and I have received a very nice and informative reply from them. They tell em they ship around 1500 units a day! and they say they think their packaging is almost "courier proof". They are of the opinion that a battery damaged in transit would be immediately apparent on unpacking and if this happened they would dispatch another immediately with a different courier.

I feel greatly reassured by this reply and I think I will be comparing what make and price they would offer me compared to make and price offered by my local suppliers. As we have the two cars I'll never be in that much of a hurry to receive it. I do like a "bargain" but, particularly with batteries, I like to buy a well known make with as large a capacity as will fit the dimensions of the battery tray. So I'm happy to spend a couple of bob more than the absolute cheapest available.

I dont like skimping on batteries but wife's car usually needs a battery quickly so end up paying silly money. This time I spotted the symptoms so could wait a couple of days if necessary. Tanya were so quick I had no need to wait. I'm a Yuasa fan so it was a no-brainer.

The battery I got from Tanya is a Yuasa YBX5012 52AH Silver High Performance (aka HSB012). Correct for the petrol Panda 169. Cost £59.35 https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2057872.m570.l1313&_nkw=312599424631&_sacat=0

Halfords have the same battery for £103.00 or I can get a Yuasa 45AH and save £3. Oh joy!

PS Just checked Euro Car Parts - Exide Premium is £136. Yobbo brand is £95.

Morning Dave. That battery looks to be the bees knees and Yuasa is a name I've been aware of for quite a while (from watching the British Touring Cars racing - you can't miss the Halfords cars which carry it - https://www.yuasa.co.uk/motorsport/halfords-yuasa-racing-2/ . With our Becky being a standard 169 60 hp could I assume it'll be a drop in fit? I am moderately friendly with one of the staff at our nearest Halfords store so I think I might ask him to bring up the price against my trade card and see what they do it for. I suspect it'll not be as good as the price you've found at Tanya though.

I used to get really cracking prices from Dingbro who I was allowed to access because I was a fully paid up member of the I.M.I. Now retired, I've allowed my membership to laps so my card is no longer current and I find, although they sold to me before, they won't sell to me now! I've had exactly the same experience at TPS who won't now deal without you unless you have a business account with them. Must say I don't understand this attitude. Is my money any less valuable or am I any greater risk or less competent because I'm retired? They seem to me to be "cutting off their noses to spite their faces"!

The old battery was shorter, needing a wood batten to keep the retaining strap tight. The new one fits perfectly.

My car threw a bit of a wobbler yesterday. It started fine then the steering tripped out as I moved off. Restarted the engine and all was well. BUT the voltmeter never went above 13.8V for a whole 175 miles. This morning the battery was showing 12.8V on the multimeter and 10.8V with starter turning so maybe it's ok.

Is the alternator getting weak? I really REALLY do not want that job so hopefully it's just a glitch - or the battery (which is a yobbo brand) is on it's way out.

April 2020 I bought a battery from Tayna. I chose the Exide 079TE, currently at £45, a little cheaper than the Yuasa. It is the same size as the '012', and I think 012 supersedes the 079, as few seem to know the 079 exists.
Many listings will only show an 002 for the Panda.
Originally, petrol models without aircon used the 002,44ah, but aircon models had a larger, 079, 53ah. This one is rarely listed any more. I just replaced like for like. The larger one might hold out better with the reduced usage they're all getting currently.

One possible reason some outlets will not sell to Jock any more, could be their 'trade only' status. They use this to reassure their customers that they will only sell to trade, so retail customers will not get the same prices as the trade, ensuring a mark-up with less quibble from their customers.
Others, such as Euro, will give anyone 'trade' price, but in reality, genuine registered trade customers get lower prices.

For reference Jock, I just had this delivered today for a friend's vehicle, it's not S/S but will give you an idea of how it's been/being packaged. This was bought from CarParts4Less

That's how mine was done with "keep upright" and "open immediately" labels on the box and a heavy vacuum bag around the battery manufacturer's poly bag.

Looks like I have an issue as the voltage has dropped since it's test start this morning. Battery? Probably, but could be a fault in the generator diode pack.

I think you are absolutely spot on there PB. I find that SRS just round the corner, relatively speaking - so I buy a fair bit of stuff there and my face is well known - give me considerably better prices than Euro or Pentland who are the other two biggies within easy striking distance. They all say they are giving me "trade" but SRS always come up considerably cheaper.

Euro can be cheaper if you buy online with a 'click & collect', but at other times, in-shop prices are cheaper. You never know, but next time you're in, have a glance around at anything on display, and check those items online when you get home. Sometimes wildly different.
Some time ago, when I needed some Ceratec grease, I ordered online, but at the shop, on display at around half the price. So I cancelled the click & collect items, and picked them up off the shelf.
CarParts4Less is Euro, and always cheaper, but seem to list a smaller range. Occasionally, just what you want is not available.

GSF are difficult. Their website prices are silly high, but most of teh time they run discounts, which can bring them down to reasonable levels. But, mostly they will not tell you what you'll get, preferring to describe as standard and premium. If you want a known brand name, need to shop elsewhere.

For me, Euro is only for 'need it now' items. CP4L usually despatch same or next day, so quite quick. If time is not important, Mister Auto is good, but Autodoc better. Mister Auto recently 'improved' their website, making it difficult to browse, and filtering the results seems impossible.

Euro is the furthest away of my options so only really worth it if I can combine a visit with a trip out to one of my boys, and even then it's only directly on the way to one of them. I've also been disappointed on occasion when they've not actually had the brand in stock I was hoped to buy. I seldom give them much consideration now. You are right about in shop offers though. A wee while ago I got a couple of spray cans of Plus Gas for approx half price.

I've been using S4p for my Fiat stuff - our Panda and oldest boy's Pumto - for a good couple of years now. I'll admit they are not always the very cheapest, good prices generally though and very good quality, and it's awfully nice to be opening genuine Fiat/Lancia labeled boxes! It would take a lot to tempt me away from them.

For the other vehicles - Astra, Jazz, My Ibiza I'm mostly going to SRS. It's taken me a few years to get confident with the brands they sell after my friends business closed due to his illness a few years ago and I've only recently really trusted their recommendations. Then, just a few months ago, they sold out to one of the "Mega" groups - Group Auto I think? - and the brands are all changing again. Personnel too so there are not so many faces I know well.

The one big exception is lubricants which I order mostly from Opie or Power Enhancer. They do some pretty good prices but I've often found them doing a "special" on ebay which is not listed on their actual website. Consequently I always do an ebay search for the specific oil I'm looking for to see if they are doing it cheaper that way. I would warn people against just looking for the very cheapest price though as it can sometimes be really old stock. I've never had a product from Opie or Power Enhancer that wasn't "brand new". Both these suppliers do service packs too and I'm doing some comparisons to see if I would be better off buying filters, plugs, etc from them when I'm ordering the oil as I would be doing the service at that time - not just changing oil.

I really do miss my friend and his business. I'd not really realized just what good prices he was doing me on really big quality brands. Tragically he's not going to get better and needs constant care, wish there was something I could do, but there's not so I just have to keep reminding myself what a lucky person I am to still have reasonably good health.

Ps. Forgot to say I got a very real bargain on timing belts for our Panda and the boy's Punto - same kit for both - from Mr Auto.

Just thought I'd round out this thread by saying, a couple of months later, the Punto started playing up again and this time we couldn't get the battery to stay charged for long. A 24 hour stand still would kill it. Checked for parasitic current draw but nothing conclusive found so bought a new battery - posted elsewhere - and the whole problem is now resolved.

Also able to confirm the vehicle "remembers" the radio code when the battery is disconnected, phew!
