How do i get the wheel locking nut off if ive lost the adapter?

a staff member in halfords said that if you get a 17" socket and smash it on with a hammer it will be able to come off... i tried this and although the socket got firmly wedged on, it turned but didnt turn the wheel nut

anyone any ideas... i really need to get the wheels off because i need to change my brake pads and ive got a suspension kit coming this week too!

Drill a slot across and get a massive screwdriver in - you can get huge screwdriver bits to go on socket sets.

well i have managed to get 3/4 of the wheel nuts off bu the one on the last wheel just wont budge. I used the method that the halfords man said but i used a 16mm socket instead as this cut through the outer rim of the nut (which spun freely to prevent people doing what imn doing)... but for some reason on the last wheel the socket keeps jumping and doesnt catch the wheel... only other thing i can think of is to get a 15mm socket ... may have one somewhere but ive looked around ... hmm
