About a week ago I posted in the "Spotted" section about a white Abarth Punto I had seen at the top end of Newhaven during one of my walks. Today I repeated the walk (it's one of my regular routes) I try to never go more than 2 days without an extended walk - all part of the master plan to stay alive! Anyway, very disappointing, It's not there. Maybe it was just a visitor or maybe it's gone to work with it's owner - I'm told people do that!

Anyway, I had taken my camera with me intending to get a shot of it as I was walking along and, shortly after starting my walk I remembered that I had previously had a "conversation" (somewhere on the forum that I can't find) with someone who lives further north (was it Aberdeen? - could be irc? - about this area. So, just in case you pick up on this thread here are some images of the places I was recommending.

It takes me about 20 minutes to, circuitously, via back streets and walkways (keeping away from the heavy traffic on Ferry Road), arrive at Starbank Park.:

Walking across the park to the other side of the buildings you get these lovely views out across the Firth of Forth:

In the view looking to the right you can see some of the new development which has gone on, and still is, all along the sea front in the old dock areas. Walking down through the park to the sea front I took a picture looking towards Newhaven harbour. You can see all the new stuff. only the low red building, which was the fishmarket and is now restaurants etc, remains from the "olden days":

Walking on towards the harbour you come to a roundabout which, on the landward side hosts "Mason's Bakery":

If you are ever passing you have to stop here and buy a mince pie. These are the traditional, greasy, meat, Scots pies so beloved of football fans and many others. I have no interest in football at all - but I love a good mince pie. Anyone who partakes of these will know that quality can be very variable. Masons are amongst the finest!

Walk across the busy road and you'll find the old harbour:

P1080280.JPG

In the first picture you can better see the old, red, now refurbished, fishmarket sheds. Now trendy restaurants and a famous fishmerchant.
In the background of these two pictures you can maybe see some big black pylons? - in the harbour in front of the back wall which the lighthouse sits on. There was a large floating pontoon anchored to them with a substantial bridge up to the dockside on the right and a reception marque on the dockside which was where the cruise ships - which would anchor out in the firth - could land passengers using their tenders. Last time I was down here there was a big floating crane in the harbour. I wondered what it was doing there. Now I know? Maybe the cruise liners are going to be landing passengers at Leith? Not so picturesque! Or maybe the locals got to greedy with landing fees? Or maybe the cruise line just doesn't stop here any more? Maybe I should ask around.

So, a steep climb up the pretty cobbled street behind the town and along to Victoria park, through the park and up towards Ferry Road when, about 10 minutes walk from home I saw this:

I'm not a lover of french cars in general but have always thought the Clio estate was a "neat" looking vehicle. anyway continued on my way home where, as I approached my house I ended up thinking how similar "Twinkle" - our Ibiza estate - looks to the Clio?

P1080283.JPG

Think I prefer the Ibiza though. Something slightly "funny" about the side window proportions of the Clio by comparison? Don't you think?

So irc (if it was indeed you) hope you enjoy the images and have the chance to view in person some time.

Kindest regards, as always
Jock

I used have a Mk2 Punto HGT Abarth. Very quick though really should have been quicker. 130bhp from a 16V 1750cc is nothing special.

I used to work in Ferry Road...

Hi rallycinq. For the edification of other forum members, Ferry road is a very long road. Maybe the longest in Edinburgh? It's almost dead straight, very old, and was literally The road leading to the ferry down on the sea front (I would guess at Leith?) in olden days.

So where abouts were you. Is it a business which I would recognize today? We are not too far from Golden Acre - Over the Herriot's playing fields.

Howard-Johnston Cars at 92 -120 Ferry Road, very near the farthest East end.

Left there in August 1993, when most of the members on this forum were still in nappies!

Small world isn't it? About a ten minute walk for me. I'm nearer Golden Acre. In fact it was Peter who supplied my Ibiza. He came up with a price that beat all the main dealers I canvassed! I was also surprised when the handover was done by Mick. We were both looking at each other and said, virtually as one, "I know you from somewhere". Turns out we go back to the days when I was working at Hall's in Musselburgh - I think he was at Taggarts? Anyway, I'm staying in touch and would certainly try them again if I decide at some time to go for a new car.

Did you know Peter has sold the main showroom site on Ferry Road and they are now trading from the smaller showroom on the corner just down the road. He has been talking about expanding to another site out at Newbridge but I don't know how advanced he is with this.

Kind regards
Jock

He started on the corner and bought the bigger one later on. He then bought the Bakery behind and knocked through to make the workshop.

Google maps has him still there in May last year so the sale must be recent.

I've only been through the back when I collected the Ibiza. I wasn't concentrating too hard as I was excited at getting my new car but I remember it as a bit of a warren and also going further back than I was expecting. I drove the new car, very nervously, out the back lane.

Yes, the sale was very recent - a bit over a month or so? haven't looked to see if he's still using the workshops - I suspect not though. There is now a sign outside offering the building for rent.

Can I be cheeky and ask if you were a sales person or a spanner man?

Hello Jock, it was me you were 'talking' to about walks in Edinburgh. I'm not on the forum as often as I'd like (despite promising the FS lot I'd make an effort to return to regular posting) but I did see this thread earlier in the week and promised myself I'd reply at the weekend as you so kindly posted pictures.

Thanks for them btw, they look great and something to look out for - especially Masons :yum:

I will be down your way on Tuesday but sadly for back to back meetings and therefore no chance of getting out and about to explore. I should be back again the following month and I may have a better chance then but certainly not Tuesday (n) I have been promised a trip to a nice coffee shop in Leith for one of the meetings but as I don't like coffee :yuck: I'm not really sold on the idea. They had better have nice cakes!

I can't even extend the trip as I have to be back up north for a non-work meeting in the evening :bang:

One day my life will be my own to do as I please

And speaking of Abarth Punto's, I spot one on Hilton Drive in Aberdeen most mornings that never seems to move - even when I'm excessively late it's always there. I do hope the poor thing gets taken out for a run in the evenings as it seems such a shame just to leave it on the driveway.

Or perhaps they work the night shift - I never go home that way so I don't know if it moves in the evenings

Thanks for the post lkc - glad you liked the pictures. That walk is one of my regulars and I have to be very strict with myself and walk down the seaward side of the road as I'm approaching Masons. If I'm lucky the traffic will be too heavy for me to justify crossing over and so save me from my weakness! The gardens have a very active volunteer group who look after it. If my car/motor cycle/horticultural machinery activities ever slow down I could be tempted to volunteer myself - if they would have me.

Tuesdays are our busiest day as we look after our youngest - and liveliest - grandchild. She has me totally bewitched though so, in my eyes, she can do no wrong! Usually we take her swimming for a couple of hours. Very tiring but ensures my best night's sleep of the week!

I've got the car day marked in my diary and intend to come but can't absolutely promise as there are potentially family things which could get in the way. I would really like to meet some of the people who engage on here though. So, fingers crossed.
regards
Jock

Good man! Much like my past although I decided sales was not for me and went down the "tools" route. Until my "mid life crisis" at 50 anyway, when I jumped into a completely different "boat" altogether!

By the way I took a wander round the back lane on my way down to the library this morning just to "see what I could see" and bumped into the man himself. He's sold the whole site, workshops and all. Tells me he is reducing "things". Retirement on the horizon? I must say, although I don't know what he would be like to work for of course, I find him a very nice chap from a customer's perspective and when I bought the Ibiza through him he did exactly what he said he would and when as well!

Put a note on the windscreen offering to buy it. You will need to budget rebuilt front brakes, cam belt (and maybe valves) and the clutch could be worn.

Thoroughly decent Chap, slightly hairbrained.

His Great Grandfather was the greatest mass murderer in history.

My guess is the site will be demolished and housing put in

No worries, we'll see you if we see you. Always nice to meet new faces at these things though. I did Brooklands a few years ago and it was great to be able to see what folks look like

Please don't tempt me

Much as I would love an AGP (I think they look great), I already have one broken car on my driveway that I need to get shifted before June. And no, that is not just making space for something else :nono:
