About a week ago I posted in the "Spotted" section about a white Abarth Punto I had seen at the top end of Newhaven during one of my walks. Today I repeated the walk (it's one of my regular routes) I try to never go more than 2 days without an extended walk - all part of the master plan to stay alive! Anyway, very disappointing, It's not there. Maybe it was just a visitor or maybe it's gone to work with it's owner - I'm told people do that!
Anyway, I had taken my camera with me intending to get a shot of it as I was walking along and, shortly after starting my walk I remembered that I had previously had a "conversation" (somewhere on the forum that I can't find) with someone who lives further north (was it Aberdeen? - could be irc? - about this area. So, just in case you pick up on this thread here are some images of the places I was recommending.
It takes me about 20 minutes to, circuitously, via back streets and walkways (keeping away from the heavy traffic on Ferry Road), arrive at Starbank Park.:
Walking across the park to the other side of the buildings you get these lovely views out across the Firth of Forth:
In the view looking to the right you can see some of the new development which has gone on, and still is, all along the sea front in the old dock areas. Walking down through the park to the sea front I took a picture looking towards Newhaven harbour. You can see all the new stuff. only the low red building, which was the fishmarket and is now restaurants etc, remains from the "olden days":
Walking on towards the harbour you come to a roundabout which, on the landward side hosts "Mason's Bakery":
If you are ever passing you have to stop here and buy a mince pie. These are the traditional, greasy, meat, Scots pies so beloved of football fans and many others. I have no interest in football at all - but I love a good mince pie. Anyone who partakes of these will know that quality can be very variable. Masons are amongst the finest!
Walk across the busy road and you'll find the old harbour:
In the first picture you can better see the old, red, now refurbished, fishmarket sheds. Now trendy restaurants and a famous fishmerchant.
In the background of these two pictures you can maybe see some big black pylons? - in the harbour in front of the back wall which the lighthouse sits on. There was a large floating pontoon anchored to them with a substantial bridge up to the dockside on the right and a reception marque on the dockside which was where the cruise ships - which would anchor out in the firth - could land passengers using their tenders. Last time I was down here there was a big floating crane in the harbour. I wondered what it was doing there. Now I know? Maybe the cruise liners are going to be landing passengers at Leith? Not so picturesque! Or maybe the locals got to greedy with landing fees? Or maybe the cruise line just doesn't stop here any more? Maybe I should ask around.
So, a steep climb up the pretty cobbled street behind the town and along to Victoria park, through the park and up towards Ferry Road when, about 10 minutes walk from home I saw this:
I'm not a lover of french cars in general but have always thought the Clio estate was a "neat" looking vehicle. anyway continued on my way home where, as I approached my house I ended up thinking how similar "Twinkle" - our Ibiza estate - looks to the Clio?
Think I prefer the Ibiza though. Something slightly "funny" about the side window proportions of the Clio by comparison? Don't you think?
So irc (if it was indeed you) hope you enjoy the images and have the chance to view in person some time.
Kindest regards, as always
Jock
