Disillusioned with the offerings of music at the moment, for a few years now if I'm honest, I'm having a wee rant here... I would also like peoples opinions as well. Is it just me, mostly I hear a large % of female singers are just so nasal/raspy in their style. As for the male singer of today they seem to be hell bent on dire/dreary songs that blend into a much of sameness.

Britain used to rule the world back in the day with classics from the 60's/70's still standing up today. OK I'm an aging rocker, but the backdrop of music back then seemed to tick a lot of boxes even the ballads & more cheesy offerings.Even allowing for my rose tinted eyewear, I still feel back in day out does most of todays contributions.

Just to finish, I've been listening to chill out/easy listening jazz for some time now & I recommend you should give it a go, at least test the waters. So much to choose from, old, new & just way out stuff...:D I'm not going to bore you all with a long list, investigating yourself is more fun. Obviously this is not going to suit everyone, but do give it a go. Ronny Jordan..Vanston place is a haunting piece that needs to be listened to. Kool&Klean are just so easy to get lost in & lay back & go with the flow. Check out the track..My world, sublime...Yep! got a bit carried away there..:D

One verse just so people can witness the genius without ear phones.

It’s my birthday
It’s my birthday
I’mma spend my money
It’s my birthday
It’s my birthday
I’mma spend my money
It’s my birthday
It’s my birthday
I’mma live my fantasy
It’s my birthday
It’s my birthday
I’mma live my fantasy
I’mma turnt up
We can turnt up
We can take it higher
We can burn up
We can burn up
Set this place on fire
Ooh it’s hot, ooh it’s hot
Damn it’s hot ooh baby
I won’t stop, we won't stop
We gon’ get real crazy

OK I'm a certain age, Willie & co may be thought as decent music to some, in a different age group, but that certainly ain't my idea of entertainment in any shape or form. Each to their own.

My parents in the 1980s “what’s going on with modern music, when we were young (the 1960s) music made sense.

Sure it did, may I present exhibit A - 1961 Barry Mann

Who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp
Who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong
Who put the bop in the bop shoo bop shoo bop
Who put the dip in the dip da dip da dip

It includes the line I'ma spend my money...dolla dolla dolla.

How can you not like that level of artistry?

I am of course being an arse...it's possibly the one song I've heard in the last few years where I literally couldn't think of anything worse. I listen to Dubstep which I admit sounds like a transformer being beaten to death...and this is still worse..

Ah yes, I recognise these terms as the feelings being discovered at the time when dancing/doing your thing/ expressing yourself on the dance floor. You have to remember, these were exciting times for the teenager/young. Up till then you dressed like your parents & were to degree told/expected to tow the line. It was a fresh time when music like this came along. Some music is based on the likes of this today.

I could prattle on, but it's worthwhile looking up the sixties history regarding this.......

"Today's music"...

...is chode.

The End.

[I could easily go on about how talentless the music industry is and how rappers need to be autotuned while they are basically talking but that would lead to a monumental rant but let's save forum server space for more useful things]

I seem to remember it went on : - "Who was that man, I'd like to take his hand", (not so sure about that though) and then "He made my baby fall in love with me". You would look deeply into eachothers eyes as you stood in the middle of the dance floor and sang the words together! Ah, the naivety of young love, (sigh)!

I'm a bit of an old rocker, would always take a bike over a scooter every time. - although the long term restoration at this time is a "peanut" NSU Quickly so that is a bit of a contradiction! - I like music that moves along with a bit of a bass line thumping away. Queen, Slow hand, Status Quo, The Byrd's, etc etc. Some of The Cure's stuff my son's played for me sounded good? But I also like The Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas, Seasick Steve, Rye Cooder, I could go on. A lot of the modern stuff I just don't like - Bah Humbug! Mrs J describes it as "music to slit your wrists to!" I had a cheap AV "all in one" setup for years as I like home cinema. When I retired I bought a better AV receiver as a present to myself and it includes an internet radio reciever. My latest passion is to tune in to some of the more obscure American country music broadcasters on the internet. These are often very small, even one man type, set ups (like the station in "Vanishing Point" I like to imagine?) and the adverts can be fascinating - "Y'all come down to Ma Ethel's yard sale Saturday morning now. There's to be free lemonade for all!" - very amusing but the good bit is the music. Songs and rythems I never heard the like of. Really different and I'm just a bit addicted now.

Aye Jock, a different era right enough, we actually went to the "dancing" & smooched the night away if you were lucky.... Ah heady times. Modern technology seems to be the way nowadays, to meet someone of the opposite sex, online dating always seemed a bit false in my book. The chase in my day was half the fun & of course having a great soundtrack in the background, ach that's me getting all romantic and carried away again......:D

My pet hate is Adele. For convincing many her voice is outstanding... it is not (BTW, judging by the videos I had to endure, I thought she was in her mid-to-late forties).
And Beyonce - for the undeserved coverage she gets in Grauniad.

I love music, and listen to allsorts of ages and genres. To give you a very rough idea, this year, I've been lucky enough to see Feeder, Reef, Madness, and Iron Maiden. Whilst I can generally tolerate most stuff, even if I don't like it, I cannot stand modern tosh. Hip-hop all sounds the same, rap is grating and irritating, pop is just plain pants. It's genuinely depressing to see how much the quality of music has deteriorated. :(

Indeed, there are reputed to be the new music sensations, I certainly don't share this enthusiasm. In the correct frame of mind I often listen to classical music, that is from centuries past, not the new classical offerings. Has anybody listened to new classical..(n) It's a real ear opener for all the wrong reasons. Equally as bad if not worse as the crappy rappy stuff.

Ooh I beg to differ, I play the piano so I know there is plenty of brilliant classical music out there from centuries ago, but there is equally plenty of crap.

These days there are a lot of people who think they are the next Debussy or Schubert, who churn out a right load of all tosh, but again there are plenty of contemporary classical composers who have composed arguably some of the most recognisable pieces in history, James Horner, John Williams, to pick two off the top of my head. (y)

On the flip side I recently went to see the hip hop musical documenting the life of Alexander Hamilton earlier this year and it was epic and beautifully done, written and composed.

There is good and bad in everything, you just need to seek out the good, most of what makes it into the charts.

Warning! About to go off topic. ;)

Not The End, that raises far more questions than it answers !?

Chode has been an insult for as long as I can remember. I used it in 2000 when writing a review of the new MINI stating...

"The gear knob is chode-ish so loyal BMW customers will feel right at home".

...
