Happy Diwali

Happy Diwali, I don't know the full meaning behind the celebration so could you give me the background to what it symbolizes.

essentially it's the start of the new year, according to the hindu calender.
as far as legend goes, it marks the return of one of the most revered figures in the hindu relgion, Ram. he had been exiled, during which time his wife Sita had been kidnapped. he overcame the odds, and some quite nasty demons, to rescue her and return home. the main part of the festival is one of lights, guiding him home safely to take his rightful place as king, and the start of a new age. so it goes that the renewal of life, faith, etc also occurs at this time. i'm off in a bit to a huge family do, instead of "bring a bottle" it's "bring a box of fireworks - a big one!".

And a happy Diwali to everyone too :slayer:

Already done a bit of celebrating at college, where we were all offered some home made food :yum: brought in by some of the students and there were candles lit. Best thing of all was that we got an early finish and could come home early :D

More Diwali's needed I say!

from Mrs T and myself

same to you... (but from me and not mrs T and you) hope you had a relaxing day.

family night was a roaring success, we had enough fireworks for about 90 minutes! the "gatling gun" was a particular favourite!!!!!!

Happy Diwali :D I love the way some neighbourhoods look all lit up with lanterns and so on, somethign I never see living up here :(

mrs t finds the celebrations in london a bit tame, we are planning a trip back to mumbai for next year, so can experience the full force of it, no legislation on fireworks out there!

theres a big campaign on to stop using the fireworks over there as they are made by little kids in factorys who get paid 50p a day ( may be a week) about 160 kids got killed in these factory's in as year :(
