As some of you may know we had the car converted to LPG about a week ago. Today I drove to London on LPG and I noticed that the petrol gauge started to go down very slowly (about 5 litres per 90 miles). I thought there is no way it can be using petrol so I phoned the conversion people and they said the car computer was altering the fuel gauge level because it detected that the car was travelling (the LPG tank gauge is seperate and they are not connected)

Anyway they said it would probably reset after I switched the engine off. So after I stopped the car for a few minutes and then switched it back on the fuel gauge goes back up to the level I expected (increased by about 25 litres).

Why does the computer do this rather than just measure the fuel in the tank. Is it for some sort of auto calibration. The conversion people can install a reset module to stop this.

i have an lpg converted marea weekend and the fuel gauge is similar to yours, it show the right level until you start the car and then its all over the place!!. also do you know you have to keep a decent amount of petrol in the tank or the fuel pump overheats!! ( i found this out after melting two of mine)

LPG sounds great, but its little things like this that would stop me ever getting a car converted. I'm going to wait until its more popular (and maybe fuel will be more expensive :( ) because then it'll become more reilable, and manufacturers will increase the number of factory LPG cars.

It does say not run the petrol down or it will destroy the fuel pump. Is the fuel pump a constant pressure one so that it is always at a set pressure or will it keep pumping until it blows up.
 
to cover the cost of the conversion,you need to do some mileage:eek: btw,if you get missfires with lpg,it tends to blow the mass meter to bits.
 
lpg is the gas stuff you can buy at petrol stations. its about 30pence a litre approx


if you get your car converted it will increase the mile per gallon of the car







drawback is it costs a pile to get the car converted to lpg

You can get the money back within about 18K miles on a Ulysse auto after that your costs are 50% and also engine wear is typically half the rate of petrol. Over 3 years I should save £4K on fuel after recovering the install costs.

The old systems used to backfire a lot killing the mass meter, but the new sequential systems do not have a higher risk of backfire than petrol as they have seperate injectors for each cylinder.
