Well, a vote to leave- made by 52% of the populace, who mostly didn't know or care about all the "facts", and didn't really have the tools at hand to foresee the outcomes...

So, why "leave"- most have voted, I believe, in the belief they will keep out pesky foreigners- largely because the campaign has focussed on that, playing on fear, and appealing to the basest of sentiments.

So the following as reported by the BBC may come as a BIG shock to a LOT of people when their "elected representatives" don't (once again) do as per thw "will of the people" !!!

"The majority of the UK's 650 MPs are in favour of Britain staying in the EU and while they will have to respect the will of the British people, they will not be silent bystanders.
There are already moves among the 450 or so MPs who want to stay in the EU, across the Labour, Conservative, SNP, Plaid Cymru and Green parties, to keep the UK in the single market in any exit negotiations.
This would mean Britain would have to keep its borders open to EU workers and continue paying into EU coffers.
They say it would be legitimate for MPs to do this because the Leave campaign has refused to spell out what trading relationship it wants the UK to have with the EU in the future - and it would demonstrate the sovereignty of Parliament the Leavers were so keen to restore."

I think it's a truly shocking a) result b) decision.

I haven't spoken to a single person who's given me a good reason for leaving, and can't come up with any ideas of what will happen or what we'll do next. I think these notions (I'm sorry if anyone here has them), that we're a strong country who can survive and we need to keep foreigners out, are good old days views. The world has changed. We're not strong. We don't export. We import more than we export. As one politician said basically that people voted with their hearts, not their heads - I don't think beliefs or personal views on foreigners or whatever have any place in politics. It should always be country first.

I'd be surprised if Scotland doesn't now push for independence, the promptly rejoin the EU.

Also a relative had the audacity to tell me that I wasn't thinking to the future because I'm young. What.

oh well. at least we keep those foreigners out. damn them coming over here with their limited benefit entitlement.

Damn you old bastards!

only a small number or small minded people believed that, they are just loud so seem like a lot

a large number of immigrants voted out you know.

both sides were full of bull thats why i based my final decision on who I trust and i don't trust cameron one bit, maybe if they had got rid of him first and put in someone i could believe i and many others may have voted different

Some reasons to leave:
Regain control of our budget (yours and my taxes).
Stop paying billions to Europe only for them to waste those billions and tell us what to spend the rest on.
Regain control of our law making and justice system.
Regain control of our immigration policy so that we can bring in the quality and quantity we need, plus start to slow down the pressure on our schools, hospitals and housing.
Forge our own trade deals across the world.
Don't let anybody believe we are small and insignificant. We are the 5th largest economy in the world, and Europe needs us to sell to more than we need them, although it would be a fool on either side who tried to put tariffs in place between us. Can you image VW/Audi group, BMW, AEG etc. being happy to see their products 12% dearer?
Don't get me wrong, the first priority for any Govt should be to explain how it is that so many hard-working foreigners have managed to find work, when we have so many unemployed and bleating Englanders bleating that there is no work to be had.
This referendum need not have happened, but the EU needs this wake up call to make it reform. If the EU is so wonderful why are nearly all the economies in it except ours and Germany doing so badly? Because it is like having a lead ball round the ankle of Government, that's why.
And you can also blame Mrs Merkel for her irresponsible policy on all forms of migration that has muddied the waters so much in this referendum between genuine asylum seekers and economic migrants. The public have taken the opportunity to get grievances off their chests all in one go.
I feel bad that you young guys are understandably scared by this situation, but don't be. Be positive. There is a lot to look forward to. We are still a great country. Be proud.

Haha I've seen it - because they want to work, and generally, take jobs that we're "above" or something. It's as simple as that. The sense of entitlement I've seen at times is shocking. I'm sure it's not just that, but I think that's definitely a factor. I actually admire a work ethic like that. I know I'm no better.

This is not a dig at everyone, but I've never been proud of this country, or being British. It's never something that's been instilled in me or a lot of my friends/age group as far as I can tell.

Whatever happens it'll have to be so carefully managed now.

I don't know how many countries you have visited or studied the history of, but without being loud about it, we do have a lot to be proud of and be very grateful for living in this country. That's why so many risk so much to get here.

pooroldcodger-- read my post at 2 re your reason "Regain control of our immigration policy so that we can bring in the quality and quantity we need, plus start to slow down the pressure on our schools, hospitals and housing". Look at what has already happened- Cameron promised to remain, and invoke article 50 within 2 weeks. By 0300 it was reported that BoJo and Gove were "negotiating" with him to leave- by 0900 he was on his way out- and now there's suddenly no need to invoke article 50 quickly according to BoJo (though it seems thankfully that they've underestimated the resolve of Juncker et all, who say let's get it over and done with asap- - and the "opposition" leader Corbyn said yesterday morning the same as the other MPs, "let's stay in a single market", whilst detaching ourselves from the "political" side of the EU-- for which membership of the single market there is NO way out of free movement of EU citizens- so how will the UK be able to regulate immigration? It's a huge con trick. It is effectively status quo re the major issue on which "leave" campaigned.

The ruling classes have once again treated the masses with the contempt they have shown themselves to deserve by believing all the BS. The referendum was never in UK interests, just that of "unity" (HA!) within the Conservative Party. Now, the Scots are aggrieved once again- all they were promised ,re a vote to stay equals a vote to remain in the EU, have gone up in smoke.Never mind the poor old Northern Irish, who have the biggest mess to sort now.

All the BoJo/IDS etc etc platitudes that it won't happen,it's all scaremongering, Europe needs us, sterling and stocks won't crash etc etc have already been shown to be untruths. There's going to be one almighty mess to sort for decades to come

People were being interviewed yesterday, saying they regretted their vote to leave 'cos they didn't understand that all this would be the fallout! Bozos-- they should engage brain rather than swallowing self-serving politicians' rhetoric................

A last 'two fingers up' to the young people of this country as the baby boomers set fire to the bridge having spent the last 50 years asset stripping the country together with a knee jerk reactionary vote by racist bigots who've proved what a bunch of thick bovine morons this country has become.. a huge huge mistake that we will regret in years to come, the only ones who seem to be impressed with the 'Brexit' vote are the French extreme right wing which says it all really. (n)

However, have you asked any of the baby boomers what they have had to put up with for the last 40 years ? We haven't been asset stripping, that has been done by various Governments and the EU. One example is...in Europe trucks of 42 tonnes weight were introduced. They are too heavy for bridges and culverts in this country and were not allowed in ! the EU TOLD GB that all the bridges and culverts must be upgraded to be able to carry 42 tonnes. I wonder how much that cost ? They have all been upgraded now and it caused tailbacks galore due to the works taking place near me for over 9 months !
It also may be that us baby boomers, who didn't choose when we were born, by the way, have seen this as a way to wake up everyone to what is going on ? The rape of this country's assets by the Luvvies and Government, to ensure their standards of living don't change ? ;)

The only thing you have to remember is that you came into this world with nothing and you will go out with nothing !

I'm 46 and voted Leave. In 73 I wasn't old enough to vote and have lived with the decision for 43 years. So all these youngsters saying they are the ones who 'Have to Live with it', just remember the oldies have already been there and done it and got the T shirt....

The country had a vote, a decision was made. Get over it and move on. Too many people including politicians are so pre-occupied with the blame game etc. and NOT about sorting this country out.

24 hours of venomous rhetoric by the vote remain camp while the vote leavers sit quietly.

People voting leave were (aside from the couple of morons they have found to put on the tv) well aware of what the result would do to the pound and stock markets. But we are only 24 hrs in and what was initially knocked off the ftse has mostly recovered already and the value of the pound is down against the dollar which again has recovered a fair amount over the last few hours, it's not that far down against the euro which has been much lower on and off over the last few years. That's how economies work they go up and down dependent on market forces.

The baby boomers are the generation who have felt most aggrieved by the EU and how it evolved from a trade partnership into something that's nothing short of an abusive relationship. So it's understandable they want out. They watch their children (my generation) unable to buy their own homes and facing the biggest longest recession in history, with countries continually needing bail outs while those same countries build new infrastructure and bridges, while we have to make do with billions of pot holes and a high speed rail service plan which will cost tens of billions and those guesses go up day by day.

Our economy will recover quickly and with the rules of Brussels we'll be less restricted.

What's done is done and we're off. Lots of angry people want another referendum, well tough that's not how politics and democratic process works, if it's still a leave what do you do? Best of 5? A vote to remain a second time would need at least a 3rd go to break the tie.

The EU want us to go quickly to remove uncertainty from the economy so go we must.

Over 50% of the U.K. Population voted to leave and to label 51.9% of the country bigoted and racist because they don't agree with your views is not only entirely wrong but completely unacceptable and disrespectful.

We now need to deal with the fall out and make this work, then we as a country can stick to fingers up to the rest of the would and prove that we aren't just some little rock in the Atlantic that used to have an empire but now just follow what some bureaucrats in Brussels tell us.

What ever your view on the result we need to work together to make it work and get things back on course. There are a lot of big possibilities now open to us now and a lot of doors closing, let's make the most of what we have.

The biggest surprise to me is not the result but the moaning from those who don't like the result, that's politics it's been the case for hundreds of years in the UK so get used to it

Britain's history is full of us hoarding countries together and telling them what they can and can't do. Now that it has been happening to us we suddenly don't like it?
We can say goodbye to a fair chunk of our workers rights (something that BoJo deems as "red tape"), a huge chuck of scientific and medical research will now struggle to find funding and staff after the EU heavily lent a hand in that area.

Personally I felt the EU was a necessary evil. Yes they cracked the whip at us but the pros far outweigh the cons. Now we're once again a silly little rock bumbling our way through the world, more divided than we ever were.

As a lorry driver i'll give you the same short answer I give everyone who trots out this old chestnut.... if you don't want lorries on the roads don't buy anything ever again.... the babyboomers have taken the cheap housing, good wages, excellent pensions, lower working hours, extravagant benefits and superior interest rates and dividends on their shares and savings, they have played the housing market boom for the past 50 years and done very well out of it thankyou and now they've denied the future generations the opportunity to enjoy EU funding and a global identity in favour of a faded british bulldog flag and dads army on repeat for all eternity... everyone who voted out should feel deeply ashamed and I promise you all, you will regret it.
