if i was to insure a second car how does it work

i know i need seperate policies, but would my NCB be used on the second policy, the online quotes i have had ask if 'i own another car' , i say yes and select my NCB entitlement, everything seems fine and im happy with the price :D

if i cant use my NCB on the other policy then im not so happy

i know a few on here have 2 or more cars, so i thought you be best to ask, google hasnt helped this time :(

Unfortunately you can only use it on one car at a time. There are some specialist companies who can arrange a discount on a second policy, but you can't use online quotes for that.

The reason they ask if you have a second car is that they think there is more chance of having an accident when you keep switching cars.

i get asked this all the time in work and people are so shocked when there price goes up cos of they cnt use there ncb

but alot of the underwriters we use do give alot of discount if you can provide proof of ncb on your other car

hope that helps

grrr......wasnt what i was hoping for :(

thought it would of given me an error on the online quote  , i assumed as it knew i owned another car, then i would have insurance on it and therefore have 2 policies

can anyone recommend a good company that can cover me for 2 cars at a reasonable rate??

Direct line will 'clone' your NCD for second car(thus giving you full discount),only set back is crash either car & you lose your NCD.

protect it

Hey Gaz, Im insured with Elephant on my cinq and my beetle.

Didnt use no claims as i dont have none as of yet, but i got discount because they Def. knew i had another car which i used more regulary and i also gave a restricted milage of the beetle as obviously i will be using the more reliable cinq most of the time.

Cinq £800 Fully Comp all mods decleard

Beetle £400 Third Party tho because of age. All mods and kit decleared

Beetle with other companys were giving me 900 - 1500 quotes because of the age and easily stolen untill i get the right equipment and it isnt classed as a classic because of the kit.

Thought i got a pretty good deal. Try them Gaz

it looks like it will be a ring round job, a good day to spend a rainy sunday though :D

an online quote with direct line was very reasonable too, just a shame i need insurance with CIS as i have still not found a company that will allow me to drive any car tpft unless im over 25

my plan of owning 2 cars looks like it will be on the back burner for a while then :(

If one is a project car and classed as SORN you can get off-road insurance with some companies (I know NFU offer this) and it works out dirt cheap which might help you save money while you work on it and get another few years experience and NCB behind you :)

that is an idea helz :) , it is a project car, and may have some work done to it

i may wait until i no longer have too declare my claim, or if i had off-road insurance would NCB be building up on that??

i will have full NCB if i keep my nose clean by next year, just a shame i cant easily use them on seperate policies...doh

Reading in the paper about a guy who had no NCB so insured his hatchback under his own name with Fully Comprehensive insurance.

He then bought a Ferrari insured under his girlfriends NCB and then he drove it all the time, as on his hatchback insurance he could drive any other car TPFT !!!

Nutter

Yep heard similiar stories but I think the insurance companies have closed that 'loop'.

One thing I don't think has been said is phone them. Forget the online quotes, speak to a person, if they don't know speak to their supervisor. Just ask if they do a discount bearing in mind you already have a no claims discount. Start with whatever company the first car is insured with!

Gaz when i insured my CInq as a second car on the uno's policy it cost me an extra 15quid for a month.. that was with S.sprint Zorst and induction kit declared...

And because of people mis-using Fully Comprehensive insurance on Low Group cars to drive High Group cars Third Party Fire & Theft all the time, the insurance companies are going to remove option of driving another car on the odd occasion for the rest of us... (n) (See AutoExpress - Think it was about 7th October)

OK, I know that older Ferrari's aren't so expensive, but still, in comparison they're still a lot to run as a main car. And if he's racking up plenty of miles, and presumably driving it quickly (otherwise why have it), then there's more chance of having fault accident, in which case he loses his Ferrari.
