We are toying with the idea of driving to Italy next year.

We travel with Simon (a JRT) so the Eurotunnel is a given. It would be good to hear any help or suggestions.

Probably heading for Tuscany...

Any tips?

Yes driven in Italy as well as a few other euro countries

Dont think its much different than driving to here really, the euro motorways are long and labourious with not much to see so i suggest you share the driving out if you can as tiredness can set in

Obv you are on the other side of the road so dont forget to give way to the left

Dont forget your euro car kit and your hi viz jacket

Avoid switzerland - their laws are ridiculous

I've driven to either Venice or Anconna to get the car ferry to Greece every year since 2007. Never found any rediculous laws in Switzerland. You do have to pay Swiss road tax though. It's only available for a full year and currently costs about €35 (EUR). It's actually a motorway tax but it's dificult to drive through Switzerland without using motorways.

As I only drive through Switzerland one way (come back via Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary etc), I now go to Italy via Austria. Road tax (Vignette) there is about €8 for 10 days and can be bought from petrol stations in, or approaching, Austria.

Thanks for the replies.

We do drive to France at least a couple of times a year so we are familiar with driving in Europe, but I hadn't properly clocked the tax issues.

Something to watch out for.

I was particularly interested in suggested routes too (though I could of course just let the Sat Nav sort that of course).

Thanks again.
