As per the title really. My old man's Primera got written of a few weeks ago, and last night we bought a 2001 Renault Laguna to replace it. Lovely car, drives nice, got all the toys, good condition, blah blah blah. So why is it that the f***ing thing now, not even 24 hours since we bought it, refuses to start?!?! :bang:

It's got Renault's slightly pointless keycard system where you stick the card in the dash and press a button to start and stop the engine. which worked perfectly this morning... now all I get is a few clicks form under the dash when I push the start button. I've even joined a f***ing Renault forum in the vain hope of finding out what's wrong with it!

(NB: I don't expect any technical advice, as most people on here have quite sensibly bought non-Renaults. This is just a rant. Oh, and apologies to Paul - The Negotiator - our resident Renault fetishist! ;) )

Do you have to depress the clutch (and I don't mean by telling it, its been bad ;) )

[rant]
New Laguna and Primera are based on the same car aren't they (question for paul if nobody else can answer). I only ask because I've been driving a 'new' style premera recently and was not impressed in the slightest.

Tried the clutch thing, even tried putting the seatbelt on incase it was some daft safety feature, but it started this morning without needing any of that.

Oh, and the Primera was an old shape one that has nowt to do with Renault (probably why it was so reliable!) ;)

we had a megane with this start feature for hire cars for work one of the lads forgot to press stop twice when leaing his for the afternoon went out it was all flat for some reason so maybe you never stopped it completely

And did you know until recently (i.e. until ford bought them) all Volvo engines upto and including 2L were Renault units!

I knew the 1700 fitted to the 340 was Renault, but I'm 99% sure that the 1400 unit was Volvo :chin:

i work at a renault import site what your describing happens all the time. the car has automatic wipers and sometimes they drain the battery cant remember how. just jump start it. that should solve it. i will ask the mechanics at work in the morning for you.

Cheers for your advice everyone, the damn car continues to confuse me though!

I did try charging the battery yesterday, but that made no difference. Yet, oddly, having left the car overnight and tried it again this morning, it now starts and runs. Which, I suppose, is a good thing, but it doesn't give me any idea as to why it wouldn't start yesterday. and no doubt this won't be the last time it happens! :bang:

The first keycard systems had faults with the keys, I am sure of it, they often lost their codes, if it happens again, use the spare. I don't know the new card system, we've not owned a renault with one yet.

Paul, I tried the spare key too and it didn't make amny difference! I think it can be put down to dodgy French electrics... just hope it doesn't do it again, can't see my old man being too chuffed if he's stuck 250 miles away at work with a dead car!

Ah well, at least my misfortune keeps Steve entertained! :p
