I was just wondering what your local roads are like at the moment peeps.

Around here they are really appalling and i'm really sick of the complete lack of upkeep from the council. I travel down the same roads most days and have now come to the conclusion that i'm gonna have to go a different way home to avoid the bumpy roads. These are not country lanes that i'm talking about either, all roads that are not duel carriageways are just unbelievably bad compared to 5 or 10 years ago.

Is it worth me saying anything to the council or will they just ignore it ?

It's the same round my way mate. But it's not the councils lack of upkeep it's those bloody cable TV technicians that don't resurface the road properly after digging it up! :bang:

Seems to be the same everywhere Mark, my Council was near the top of the list for roads in bad states or repair.

T'is shocking, shame our road tax pays for smokers lung transplants!

takes a good few mails and calls to get it sorted. One road round my way needs resurfacing all the time as the bus route and traffic calming measures just ruin it. End up with potholes that can swallow full size footballs!

You complain, complain again. About a month later they come.

And dont get me started on another road opposite me thats just been resurfaced  It was better with teh potholes! The surface now is so uneven and crap (considering its tarmac..) its better to drive on a dirtroad. They didnt even flatten/level the tarmac out. they just chucked it all out an smoothed it over a bit. (n) :bang:

The only money they spend on roads lately are for the extending of carriageways to try to make the traffic flow better, and then they go and stick traffic lights all the way around the bloody roundabouts which completely defeats the purpose to me :bang:

Eh? & where did you get that info from?

Was sure I read that road tax and petrol tax was being plowed into healthcare to give Labour a better image, even if all the money was used they would all never be perfect plus the work would cause another equally bad head ache for us, traffic lights and cones etc.

I thought local roads came under the local councils therefore out of your council tax? Road & petrol duty paid for the upkeep of the major motorways & trunk roads?

You're right Ben as to who has control over what but I don't think any road tax money is ringfenced for road spending. Just to add the roads are awful round here as well, there's one road on my way to work which is very bad, two drains sticking up and the car thumps over them (they're angled so you have to drive over either one or the other :(). Haven't started writing to the council yet but if anyone wants to start a campaign........

If the councils stopped wasting money on un-needed traffic calming the roads would be ok. The A6 at Blackrod- just past the Jarvis hotel on going towards chorley side had a hole in it about 2ft square. this wasnt just tarmac layer missing- it was an effing hole! Not drove down it since monday but i bet its still there.

Speaking of dodgy road conditions I have now got to drive into Skelmersdale in the wet on their lovely red tarmic which im sure has been there since the dinosaurs and tefal get their non-stick surfaces from.

these things annoy me to!

i live in a suburban village, which means on any stright bit of tarmac theres 1000s of bloody road humps!

and yet, looking down the side roads they're disgraceful!, my road is fulla them, mainly about 10inches away from the curb, right were your wheels go!

also, the road markings have long since faded, and apart from the bits where cable has been installed, the road surface is how it was when it open in the 50's

the thing that gets my goat is that its the small, suposedly "ecologically safe" cars, like my cinq, or normal size like a punto or bravo have to go over them full on, (it killed the rear suspension on my brothers Punto), yet these huge 4x4's with one little mother and kid storm over them, like they arnt there!!!!!!

Thats a really good point Serin (y) It may be worth writing to an MP with that in mind, with all this crap about enviromentally friendly cars and stuff ,maybe they need to look at making the roads friendly to those cars first eh.

Well I tell you mates that the roads in London are disgraceful - especially bearing in mind that this is the Capital City of the whole of the UK and therefore the centre of the Universe. You need a panzer to get through the tank traps round here provided you can negotiate the inumerable pot holes whilst avoiding (most of the time) cyclists who can't or won't see pedestrian crossings or traffic lights, kamikaze pedestrians crossing open roads usually towing their kids, idiots coming at you from side roads with the right of way according to their version of the Highway Code (if they've ever seen it), the planners favourite of three lanes into 2 or even one if it slows the traffic down better, bus lanes and aggressive bus drivers, speed cameras, traffic light and bus lane cameras and not least the dreaded school run Mums who definately know that they have an absolute right of way at all junctions, roundabouts and in narrow streets where only one vehicle can pass at a time.

We pay first rate car tax, petrol tax and congestion charge and get third world roads. :bang:

Just got back from Skelmersdale and youd think for a town with as many roundabouts and indeed the worlds second largest (or whatever) they'd invest in some non-slip tarmac. The Stilo had comical handling round there!

Back in my home turf, its the actual grids at 1930s street level and all the dodgy roadwork patching up, covered up by a thin layer of surface is shocking. Sometimes when braking, the shock when you hit a bump actually makes the car think its in the S**t and puts the ABS on!

Even worse, I was that annoyed at my brother, I may have not been paying attention for evil street furniture (ie our money earner GATSO)

The town next to Bournemouth which is Poole has brilliant roads, and it's these that highlight how bad Bournemouth roads are. In fact quite a few of the towns and cities in that direction have lovely smooth roads. I think I'll go for a drive tomorrow, I may take the video camera and you can see the difference between the two neighbouring towns.
