Now I don't particularly have anything against speed cameras in general, I live on within 3 miles of 3 primary schools so they are a fact of life. I'd have nothing against them putting permanent cameras up outside each school.

However when they start doing things like this:

You do really have to question the motives of those involved. As well that has no deterrent value whatsoever for starters...it's almost as though it's only there to raise revenue.

Not so much badly hidden behind a tree as strategically parked to hide the warning sign legislation requires which is on the sloped roof in above the windscreen and the dual row of flashing lights on the top.

Tbf all the locals know where they are likely to hide so the only business they'll get is people who don't know the area. Bloke is an utter see you next tuesday. Another of his favourite tricks is to take the place of a van that is normally parked there. There's a taxi that is the same model of transit and you can bet he'll park up directly behind it and hope no one notices the difference.

isnt it there to catch people breaking the law and send them a fine and 3 points that may stop them doing it again before they kill some one:confused:

Around 400 people a year are killed in crashes in which someone exceeds the speed limit or drives too fast for the conditions.

compare that to drink driving

Around 280 people die a year in crashes in which someone was over the legal drink drive limit.

so i don't understand why people stick up so much for speeders......

Dave this has no deterrent value at all...which does rather defeat point. If it was out in the open no one would speed, if they had a permenent speed camera no one would speed past it effectively stopping speeding at this spot which is outside of a school.

This is to my mind pointless if someone went speeding past it didn't see it and then continued up the road at same speed and knocked a child over at the next school up would you be comforted by the fact the driver also had a 60 quid fine on the way?

not a case of sticking up for speeders

its how they are catching people incorrectly - but i know it still aint point, if your speeding, your speeding simples

I think he totally missed the post above explaining that. Speed is the least of our problems on the roads. This high and mighty "I'm more important that everybody else" attitude that seems to be on the rise needs stomping on.

if it was out in the open or a fixed camera no one would speed in that tiny spot, if they could be hidden any where at any time people will have to be more aware of their speed at all times.
kids don't just use schools they could be any where

Anywhere anytime doesn't apply, have a link to map with every single possible camera location in the north east on it.

That being the case they are only a deterrent in a small area regardless of whether they are hidden or not. Ergo they'd prefer to deter people retrospectively with fines and make money rather than making people slow down on the day.

Then comes the side issue of what you'd prefer to step out in front of, someone sitting with their feet on the floor cruise control set at 30 mph or driving along looking at their speedo or someone who is actually looking at the road.

Surely the deterrent is already in place via the fine/points.
The van is enforcing.
If they had a speed camera,it would still 'catch' people.

Ok i'm sure you'd be perfectly happy to have plain clothes police man at your work place just in case something illegal was discussed or happened...we do have to guard against the possibility someone somewhere may break the law.

In other news they're going to be arming local residents with speed guns..can't see how that could go wrong at all..

I work in an industry with our own security dept & multiple tests/audits etc
So Im not sure what difference it would make.
The van isnt there to catch somebody in a Minority Report style. its to catch people who whilst having met the criteria to old a licence, choose not to adhere to the standards.
Im happy for the Police to clamp down hard in residential areas all day long.

We had that they would stop people and demand their name and address, then give details to the police and a letter would be sent.
My daughter got stopped by them she was doing 40 in a 40 but they were saying it was 30 she refused to give details as she had done no wrong. They stood in front of her car refusing to let her move until she gave her address, some thing I don't think they are allowed to do.

Police were called and confirmed my daughter was right, now the people with cameras have disappeared :chin:

There lies the rub...this is not a clamp down, the speed van doesn't come out after dusk, or in bad weather or early morning. He can't stop dangerous vehicles that are complying with the speed limit, people on their phone, people with no tax or insurance, people who are drunk if they are doing 29mph...

As a method of enforcement it's a poor joke, especially as it doesn't even stop the undesired behaviour on the day if it is hidden. I'm sure you'll be sitting there thinking "ah but that is the job of the traffic police" and you would be right except of course it has been months since I've seen a traffic car up here, in fact they only seem to come up this way to attend RTCs..perhaps if they were up here more often they'd have fewer to attend.

And Dave that story does not surprise me at all.
