hi i basically require a sat nav system that has an intrigated gps aerial as i dont want loads of wires, do i buy a dedicated system like the one in aldi at the moment for £220, or do i buy a pda with sat nav, also i require speed camera detection so does anyone know whether the aldi one detects speed cameras? and also does anybody know if the downloadable database works?
thanks alex

I'd go for a PDA too... If you want everything all at once though you could get an XDAII mobile phone, PDA, and get a blue-tooth GPS receiver.

Have yu got a Nokia Smart phone?

I managed to make mine Sat Nav enabled for roughly 70 notes.

Its all wireless, as you can see, there's a bluetooth receiver there.

i was swaying towards a pda but noticed that aldi were selling one that seemed good but wasnt sure whether you could put speed cameras on it, when using the data base do u have to be in navigation mode for this to work or can u just use it like a normal speed camera detector plug and play?
thanks alex

using the database from pocketgpsworld, you need to run an external plugin for TomTom and have the database copied over.

the plugin talks to tomtom and when it gets near a camera, it alerts you too it.

For this reason, i don't know if the device aldi are selling will let you run a 3rd party program, or can alert you to Points Of Interest stored in a database.

Have a look on there, and have a look at their forums. someone should be able to give you a definite answer.

EDIT: I think Paul has a satnav pda system for sale.. ask him how much he wants for it (y)

can it run the speedcamera database? if not, don't listen to this guy - listen to the rest of us :p

i used to give tomtom a bit thumbs up, however now i give it a massive thumbs down.

the amount of roads it has tried to make me turn down that don't exist, one way streets the wrong way (it still gets pariliament square mucked up....) and the best one today...

I was going down farringdon road, on the bridge *over* another road, as i get to the middle of the bridge (ie directly over it) tom tom tells me to make a sharp left. So that would be off the bridge onto the road below then,. er, right. It then corrected itself after i missed the turning by sending me down not 1 but 2 culdesacks, told me to take the 4th exit on a 2 exit roundabout before finally rerouting me 5 miles the other way....

TomTom in London (n)

Bah GPS

London Road Atlas or AA website and a Printer/Pen n Paper Never failed me.

The RAC one did though, never askin that site for directions again, bloody useless

As for Speed Cameras??? erm Big Bright Yellow Boxes why you need a detector? just dont speed on the M25 ok :p

i have a motorola a1000 mobile and i have just added nhgps. I havn't found a fault so far. works fantastic once set up and has detectors for specs, gatso, mobile and can't remember the 4th. Tells you what speed they are set at and everything. I will be running it to warington tomorrow to give it a good try. Best thing is it uses the built in gps so i don't need an atitional adaptor.
