does the parade lap count as the first lap?

Not sure, but it seemed from what was said yesterday that it does.

better having no points than being dead.

i meant cause they started the race when if they never, race would be called off and no-one would get any points , so why start a race knowing that the other teams would get an advantage

Imagine if this happened at the 2007 Monaco GP?

As far as I'm concerned, Michelin are to blame for starting the whole situation. I heard the track surface was different (didn't know how how though). Now if I knew that, don't you think a multi billion dollar company would know that too? That's why they are being frowned upon.
The FIA are to blame as well for not sorting the situation out. I can see why they didn't want to change the track layout - it would be a disadvantage to the Bridgestone runners, which would be unfair. I can see them wanting to stop Michelin changing tyres as it would affect the integrity of the FIA. The Michelin teams offered to run with a chicane, but not race for points - a non championship race. I'm not sure what the implications would be after and whether the teams (e.g. McLaren) would kick up a fuss if it came to that the extra points Ferrari picked up as a result of this race put them at an advantage at season close. It could cause bad feeling and disrepute.

I reckon that the FIA should have let the teams run the Barcelona batch of tyres - they would have had some data to help with setups, the show would still go on, everyone happy. They would have no setup data if they went for the chicane, would they?

All in all it has, IMO wrecked the credibility of F1 in the US. With NASCAR and IRL and ChampCars, you could ask the question why would they need F1? As Mark Blundell said, 'there's a NASCAR race on now.........and they still have 43 runners'.

I don't think it's entirely down to Michelin (although how pathetic is it that a company that size couldn't develop a tyre to cope with that circuit).
I think that the FIA needs to rethink its decision to use grooved tyres and ban tyre changes. F1 was far more interesting back in the days of slick tyres and proper pit stops, where part of the challenge was to change all 4 tyres as quicky as possible.

I knew this thread would be here so I went all the way to my local library to post on it. How sad is that.

Anyhoo, I thought it was great viewing. The whole thing was very amusing and I didn't think there was any need for ITV to continually apologise about it. The only people who will be annoyed are those at the track, and rightly so - they didn't get what they paid for.

On the other hand for us sitting at home it was more entertaining than ever. It's entertaining that minardi now have more points this season that the previous 6 put together - and I think they deserve it. It's Michlin's responsibility to build a tyre for the race and if they can't do that why shouldn't the bridgestone cars benefit?

And there is proof of this. How can people say it wasn't worth watching when loads of you went to watch it especially to see what was going on! Last week at the canadian GP I posted the results in another thread and not one person even replied - this race must have been much more entertaining for so many of you to want to watch and write about it.

The race itself of course was boring. But the build up and finish to it (especially the podium) was priceless. All publicity is good publicity and I personally gaurantee that this episode will get more people watching the next race. Which is a good thing, because maybe then ITV will get off their sorry asses and screen the qualifying live instead of frigging you've been framed

I couldn't get on net, so I couldn't post :( But I can now :)

Coming back on topic, what do people reckon was the best way of sorting out the problems they had?
